Ok I just got rogers back, so I have to internet connections for the time being. Im trying to download torrents using the lates version of bit comet, but the speeds are almost no existent. Are other people on Rogers experiencing this too? Can we do anything about it? When I switch back to my DSL connection the torrent speeds come to life and jump way up so I know its not my configuration.

Rogers is using something that slows down the standard Bittorrent ports i belive, Just use non standard ports of something like adding a 1 to the beginning of the standard ports. like originally 6881 (i think) - 6889, Change it to 16881 - 16889. If you have a router, make sure the ports are forwarded properally.

Actually I got it working thanks, I knew about the non standard ports. I am using ports in the 9000 range.

since rogers is useing a software solution to do so its only used in areas of heavy traffic and not all areas.
and it can't cover all ports at once without causeing issues.

Actually it's a hardware solution which sniffs all ports for traffic they want to throttle, in this case bit torrent and throttle it at a preset speed. It seems to work well, for them.

i think they're throttling the ports as i change them lol.
now im seriously considering switching to sympatico faster upload, no limits, and no throttling!!!!!

I'd take it on a trial first, wait until Bell brings out their one month free promotion again and keep your Rogers connection during that time in case Bell doesn't work for you.

up tell now i hadn't heard rogers had spent the dough for them yet.
wouldn't be much of a suprize though they were the last ones holding out.

The real problem is that their network cannot handle the large load of customers transferring all that bandwidth. Instead of upgrading their equipment, they're taking the easy way out and limiting the bandwidth each subscriber uses and imposing bandwidth limits. If they just spent the money to upgrade rather than "downgrade" they wouldn't have to monitor bandwidth usage and it wouldn't piss off customers.

too very true.
when i was on it i had extreme but rarely got those speeds due to the overload problems.
with bell i on the 3000/700 setup which at first glance seems much slower.
but with no caps and no bandwith limits i can get speeds that max out.
they have to be makeing a mint now with people dropping rogers like crazy.
there system has been upgraded and can easly handle any load the users could put on it.
don't envy rogers thses days.
What torrent site do you guys use and how do you 'forward' ports?

depends on what your on.
dsl you can do anything over 9000.
cable i would do anything over 50000 to 60000 since thy tend to mess with alot of the ports on cable and those aren't used.

OK, stupid question here:
I have a Linksys 4-port cable router, Rogers, and I'm using Shareaza (on WinXP Pro). How do I do what you mentioned above? My download speeds are anywhere from 4kb/s to 15kb/s. Thanks.

They aren't slowing them down or throttling them, in my area they are blocked totally, I get nothing coming through, and it does not matter which ports I try.
You can read about other people experiencing the same thing here.

too free up bandwith for the suggested new speeds rogers is now using throttling hardware like cogeco.
the probelm is there not doing that they are blocking heave load areas from useing any type of p2p software period.
at this point its only a test but its likely to be more widely used very soon by them.
yet another underhanded stunt by rogers and yet another change to that piece of paper you sign.
thankgod i left them behind.

If your speeds drop to 0 then there is nothing you can do but switch ISP's. Its coming anyway, I'd start looking for an alternative ISP or simply give up BT.

Hey Law. I don't want to lead you down the wrong path, because I'm pretty much clueless to this, but I found a site that may be helpful:
http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/fr_index.html?/main/sbs-linksys-port-forwarding.html
Again, use at your own discretion. Let me know how it goes.

Depends on what client you are using. The official one I believe does not allow you to change the ports but all the others do. Just search around the options and there should be something labelled like ports and it should have the default 6881 port. Just change this to something else.
Regarding the port forwarding post above. That generally doesn't need to be done nowadays as most clients and routers support UPnP. If yours doesn't or has problems with UPnP, then you got to forward the port you set your client to use the same one on the router. That way when someone uses bittorent tries to contact you, it uses a certain port, and your router will know what to do with it instead of ignoring it.

how fast is other people getting for speeds on sympatico high speed?
the fastest I have seen mine go is 85 k (or kb not sure exactly) /sec for download and upload is 39k or kb /sec
can anyone go faster on this plan?
networkguy
08-04-2005, 01:09 PM
I'm on a 3MB ADSL service, I had one torrent come down the other day at over 350KB, and I've had a few other single torrents come down around that fast. The thing to remember is a speed of a torrent is totally dependent on how many seeders and peers there are, the more seeders and peers the faster you will get the torrent pushed to you.

true but I forgot to add that my dload speed i listed wasnt for torrent... thats the fastest I have downloaded off the net period. I pretty sure Sympatico HS can go faster than that.

there are other things which affect speed.
if you have a router and what type.
your client and settings.
has one edited the hidden settings in windows?

routers ..cheaper ones can handle only around 256 conections
..so you set your client to a max global conections to 240
excpetions to this would be newer linskys which can do 4096 (set to 4000)
download xp antispy and use it to set the conection limit to unlimted instead of 50.
don't set your upload higher then 150 on or you will likely kill the upload and download speeds.
lastly even if the thing you downloaded has big seeds and peers sometimes there all slow...lol.
on bell this should be able to get over 200 with a good download.

best clients.
azurues..most options and most widely used but can be some what confuseing for newbes. also can be heavy on system resources since its done in java.
bit comet..little impact on the system and easy to setup.
new versions have removed most of the not so nice issues and it now works fine. a good simple client.

I have pasted my 61G cap on Rogers Extreme service it includes 61G of Dload/upload bandwidth..
I am at 180G and still going..:)
I guess i'll be getting a letter or e-mail??
Has anyone here be cut off?

Jamie, I would suspect that pretty soon your torrents will stop working alltogether, so I wouldn't worry about getting cut off or getting a letter, just get as much as you can while you can.
