I currently have 512mb of ram as seen in my sig, I'd like to add either a one gig stick, or 2 512 sticks to up my amount to 1.5gb.

I have my ram in a dual channel setup right now. My question is will I notice any major performance hit If i add some pc3200 ram to my current 3700?

this is what I wanna get

any opinions?

Are there any differences between dual channel and single channel?

dual channel and single channel don't make much difference.

going up to 1.5 gig is going to make things seem rather smooth and zippy since you will have a large amount of ram for everyday use.

only drawback is that the 3200 will slow down the 3700 to its speed.

ya thats where im confused. The 3200 ram is rated at 400mhz, which is exactly what im running with the 3700.

Oh and I do heavy photoshop and video editing, along with some 3d rendering :)

then the more ram will make things much faster for those apps.

and any marginal speed drop your not going to notice since its going to be over shadowed by the ram itself.

I belive PC3700 is suppose to run at 466Mhz.

My ram is rated at running with a max 600mhz, I just don't know how to do that though.

Best performance is achieved via matching the ram clock speed to that of the FSB; there is no point of going higher due to bandwidth constraints. If you plan on not using dual channel, disregard this advice.

Most motherboards do not support above PC3200/200Mhz DDR.

I prefer to go over, if you buy a new cpu with higher fsb you wont need to spend more $ on ram....
