So I bought two HP PC's recently and I'm about to receive two free upgrades to Vista. I'm in no rush to upgrade these two but I'm soon due for a new notebook.

Most of them I've seen now come with Vista. Something I'm not really looking forward to but eventually I have to bite in the sour apple. Or do they still offer XP?

There are many threads on here with Vista troubles, so why not have a positive one (at least I hope there's something positive).

What applications do work with Vista?

Some good sites with lists?

Well, for me I'd say about 90% of the apps i used in Windows XP, also work in Vista. The only thing I'm not using Vista for is games, as there is a performance hit apparently (plus no DX10 games out yet). I have way too many apps to list them all, but I'll name off some of the apps I often use:

Nero 7 Ultra/Premium or whatever you wanna call it
Adobe Creative Suite 2
Adobe Premiere
Propellerheads Reason 2.5
Sony Acid Music Studio w/ Soundforge
uTorrent (1.6b474 - the safe one)
Office 2007
All my video encoding software - too many to name - but most are of the freeware fame.
All of my benchmarking apps (ie/ 3DMark's, CPU-Z, blah blah blah)

The only thing I know isn't supported are my printer drivers, but I still dual boot to XP MCE, so I just print stuff off when I boot into that OS.

Apps I know don't work (at least properly) on my PC in Vista are:

Creative's Bloatware apps for my soundcard (like i care anyway)
Transcode360 - an app I use to stream video (Divx, Xvix, .mov etc) to my XBOX 360. The current Vista beta is a mess and doesn't even uninstall off VIsta if you have burning software installed.

These are just a few of the apps i can think off the top of my head.

Hope this helps.

So I guess I better wait until the ratio is the other way;)

Everytime I read more about Vista's incompatibilities, another utility or program comes to mind that I'm using.

Doing a dual boot system is the way to go, while Vista is for experimental use only.:hst:

Yes, dual boot's a good idea. Most times you can use a different program, but sometimes just checking the forums for that program, there are workarounds.
2 programs that work great for me with minor setting changes are:
Vlan (video lan - a video setting needed changing to run properly)
Gbpvr (my pvr software - just needed to make sure it was set to run as admin)
VideoRedo - works great with no changes

I'm installing Vista in a week or so... I hope most of my games and apps continue to work.

I was watching tech TV and they showed how you could recover a file that had been previously changed... I could have used that a few times. Lets say you delete text from a document and hit save... apparently you can open an older version still containing the deleted stuff. Neat.

I can do that by naming them 1, 2, 3.

Hardly rocket science.

The trick being you can recover stuff you didn't realize you needed. Sometimes files get saved inadvertently or unknowingly and you need the old version back. Your method wouldn't work unless you had a time machine. :)

Believe it or not but all my problems with Vista (which have been Few) have been caused by companies not doing drivers.

I Have a Logitech Cordless mouse which Logitech will not create driver for it. They say that it is built into Vista but strangly, if you go to add items in Vista and ask for a list of all items, Logitech is not included in anything.

Their Messenger Cam will not work

They issued a keyboard driver for their fancy keyboards and it crashes.

Quicken XG will not even run in Vista

I have the following that work well
PaintShop Pro X
Adobe Elements 5
Open Office works Well
Winzip 10
Firefox with Roboform
Xara Extreme
Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Sidewinder
Microsoft Works 10 and 2006 Streets

I have an AMD 4600+ HP Pavillion

Keep us informed here gys and gals and lets see what will run and what will not.

Just got an e-mail that my upgrades shipped. I imagine once I'm home I won't be able to resist and have to install Vista at least on one PC.

It will be my PC since I'm sure that the better half won't let her PC be the guinea pig. She keeps telling the dogs to bark if I get close to hers. With Vista's track record I'd be in hot water in no time.;)

Wonder how my Visual Basic programs I've written will do in Vista?

All my programs work for Vista. Just search around for programs you want to double. As stated above a lot of the problems are due to manufacturers not gett their drivers or software updated in time.
