Hello all,

A group of students and myself are looking to start a new club next year focused on IT Security and before we can even get the thing off the ground we need some help. First I need to know the difference between expensive domain name hosts and the cheap ones? I have seen the .ca ones for as low as 20 dollars a year and as much as 50. Why would we need to pay more for this service?

or

$1400 for a Panasonic...

try godaddy if you want cheaper $, or 1and1 or dollarhost

It depends where you go, I recomend GoDaddy (http://www.godaddy.com) they have some pretty cheap domains, I pay $6.95 per year for mine ( plus privacy) been dealing with them since '04 and never a problem.

Some web hosts will also let you register a domain when you setup your hosting account but bear in mine it takes about 24 to 48 hours for your domain to be active.

What type of hosting are you looking for?

For Canadian domains I suggest DomainsAtCost.ca (http://www.domainsatcost.ca)
Good prices and great service (based in Ottawa). .ca for $12.95 per year

For all other domains either GoDaddy.com (http://www.godaddy.com) (probably the most popular these days) or NameCheap (http://www.namecheap.com/?aid=88&rid=180400) (I use these guys for most of my domains and very happy ... free private registration and very easy to use interface)

In the case of domain names, price is not everything. Competition heated up and prices are now much better than a few years ago.

Webhosting is another story, and if you are looking for a webhost to host your website and domain, ask away ... I am sure you'll get a lot of suggestions.

If you are familiar with issues surrounding Domain Registration, and DNS, by all means, go with a cheap one.

In a few cases, you are paying them a bit more, so they'll have time to work on your behalf.

In our case, we have numerous small businesses who want to be worried about selling their product, manning their store, and so on, and do not want to trouble themselves needing to know the pitfalls of Domain Registration.

Take care,

Support, service, interface, and marketing.

Those are the key points.
