This was sent to me through email, just thought it belonged here :)

>>>> Canadian Government Policy

>>>> It is interesting that the federal government provides a single
>>>>refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890.00 and each can get an
>>>>additional $580.00 in social assistance for a total of $2,470.00.

>>>> This compares very well to a single pensioner who, after
>>>>contributing to the growth and development of Canada for 40 or 50 years,
>>>>can only receive a monthly maximum of $1,012.00 in old age pension and
>>>>Guaranteed Income Supplement.

>>>> Maybe our pensioners should apply as refugees!

>>>> Let's send this thought to as many Canadians as we can and
>>>>maybe we can get the refugees cut back to $1,012.00 and the pensioners
>>>>up to $2,470.00, so they can enjoy the money they were forced to submit
>>>>to the Canadian government for those 40 to 50 years.

>>>> Please forward this to every Canadian you know to expose what
>>>>our elected politicians are doing to over-taxed Canadians.

That's appauling, but you should also see what the permanently physically handicapped, living alone, get. I am ashamed that "we the people" treat them worse than caged animals - out of sight, out of mind. Immigration pay-outs have always bothered me. I am not against immigration, as we are a country of immigrants, but let's take care of our own citizens first - especially the elderly and handicapped.

More on the handicapped:

I know of a man, 58, handicapped since birth and getting worse. No use of legs and rest of mobility restricted. Can't work. Wheelchair-bound. Living in a subsidized apt.

Monthly income from gov't = $600/month
His part of rent = $150/month

Leaves $450/month for ......

Heat and Hydro extra
No cable included and was admonished because he had basic cable and he had to get rid of it or get cut back
Electric wheelchair - he has to pay for it, no gov't assistance, or beg for service club to assist in payment. Have you ever priced an electric wheelchair or even a regular one? Like buying a car - ripoff, big time. And don't forget about maintenance - high cost.
Insurance for wheelchair - extra
Of yes - we can't forget about food and clothing - what little he can get with what is left over.
Do the math ... would you even want to attempt to live on that? He could live much better on his own on that refugee's subsidy.

And, yes, the system knows of him. Social workers have seen and met with him. Just nothing available to support him financially. As a society we should hang our heads in shame.

The handicapped and the elderly ... ignore and they will go away, eventually.

So how much does an immigrant get who isn't a refugee?

Answer: The pensioners do vote Conservative, the immigrants will vote Liberal.

Next question please.

Answer: The pensioners do vote Conservative, the immigrants will vote Liberal.Regardless of what party is in power now, this travisty continues through all party reign in power.

The handicapped are a "weak" voice, and mostly out of sight. The pensioners have just given-up. Been fighting all their lives, and just want to get away from it all.

The majority of us will be there soon. As a pensioner, or, god-forbid, also handicapped. Not every one has a strong voice and the ability to stand up for their rights - we need to speak for everyone - and now.

Pity there's no source given for the numbers.

The feds have a program for Convention Refugees.

Those are the fortunate ones. Hand picked out of Refugee camps abroad.
Basically people displaced by war.

The program is called RAP (Resettlement Assistance Program)

Under RAP, income support is provided for up to 12 months and up to 24 months for those with special needs. Income support amounts are set in line with provincial social assistance rates.

In 2003/2004 they spent $40.4 million to resettle 5,700 government-assisted refugees

Works out to $8000 per refugee total.

That is ONLY available to a Convention refugee.
Not to refugee claimants.
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/refugees/resettle-3.html

In Ontario

"Convention refugees are not eligible for financial assistance during their period of eligibility for the Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) under Immigration Canada.

"When RAP has expired, Convention refugees may be eligible for assistance under Ontario Works providing they meet the same criteria as other applicants."

"It is important to note that refugee claimants are not eligible for a health
card from the Ontario Ministry of Health"
----

Refugee claimants( different from Convention Refugee) can ask for social assistance.
Same as anyone else.
They are NOT entitled to increased benefits or different benefits.

Further, contrary to what the e-mail claims, Ontario specifically prohibits
" additional social assistance" to any receiving federal funds.

There's a big disparity between what that the e-mail claims to be true and published policy.
I'm forced to call B.S. on those e-mail claims.

Um, don't believe everything you read - especially on the internet. When I saw that it was an e-mail with no credible source (like a url/link to a real newspaper article) displayed, I scrolled right through it. No point of wasting my time.

Another of those who don't want to waste their time but take the time to tell us they don't have the time to waste..........

and we all know that researching a subject for facts takes as long to type out a line of text...
at least to Walter it does.

I've seen this before, and have read posts showing it wasn't true. If it were it sure would be really really unfair. It would seem fantastic enough to make a good news report investigating it.

I am getting tired of your hero worship......I hope it is not too much of a shock for your fragile and boring existence but I have never proclaimed I am perfect and I have stated my reason for being in these groups. The time stamp for your "contributions" :hys: seem to indicate you are on 24/7 and I truly believe that given even a semblance of effort you might contribute something worthwhile, like you do in the mac forum, and give me a break from your efforts to promote me to sainthood.

But following through on your original statement....

I've seen this before,(WHERE) and have read posts (WHEN) showing it wasn't true. If it were (YOU JUST SAID IT WASN'T) it sure would be really really unfair. (HOW CAN SOMETHING YOU DECLARED FALSE BE UNFAIR?) It would seem fantastic enough to make a good news report investigating it.//

(WHERE)on the internet.

(WHEN)Whenever this posting shows up somewhere that I happen to be reading.

(YOU JUST SAID IT WASN'T) No I didn't. I read that it wasn't.

(HOW CAN SOMETHING YOU DECLARED FALSE BE UNFAIR?)I didn't *declare* anything old boy. However it is quite a conundrum now isn't it?;)
