When I bought my computer Windows XP professional was installed. Recently my microsoft update downloads included validating the windows xp version I had was genuine. I downloaded it assuming mine was genuine. It isn't and the company I bought the computer from has now gone out of business. After this recent download I am unable to get further updates nor can I delete this recent installation. Is there another way of getting regular window updates?
thanks

Well do you have service package 2 of Windows XP installed? Cause if you do then you can just disable the verification check.

Otherwise just keep automatic updates enabled and allow it to download the updates automatically. This will only allow to download the critical updates.

Or just buy a copy of XP.

Microsoft "Genuine Advantage" cracked in 24h: window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all'

AV sez, "This week, Microsoft started requiring users to verifiy their serial number before using Windows Update. This effort to force users to either buy XP or tell them where you got the illegal copy is called 'Genuine Advantage.' It was cracked within 24 hours."

Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter:

javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all') It turns off the trigger for the key check.

You can simply download AutopatcherXP (http://myitforum.techtarget.com/articles/20/view.asp?id=7836)

I don't know where you live, but in the UK, if you had bought the computer using either a credit card, or on credit, the credit provider would be as liable as the original supplier - so the fact that they have gone bust may not matter.

Aditionally, it may be worthwhile contacting Microsoft, there have been many cases of software being incorrectly reported as fake, and I believe that Microsoft have provided new keys free of charge to remedy the situation. They have also provided significant discounts (50% or even 100%) in circumstances similar to those you describe - ie the user has been conned!)

you can also bypass WGA in Windows XP SP2 by disabling the WGA plugin in Internet Explorer.

Control Panel + Internet Options + Programs + Manage Add-ons, then pick "Windows Genuine Advantage" and click the Disable button.

Disabling the plugin only works for the Windows Updates site though - the Microsoft Download Center will just bring you to that silly little "enter the code" screen.

(for which there is a "workaround")
