Does anyone know of reducing the file size of MP3s on my hdd. something simple, that i can do 'em in bulk.

You understand that reducing the file size will reduce the quality?

yeah you would have to re-encode them to lower quality which simply sucks. or if you just don't want to listen to the mp3's and just have them for storage or something then you can use a file archiver and rar the files.

Burn them as data CDs or DVDs. You could then delete the HDD copies.

Agreed. Only have the ones you listen to verry frequently on your HD, the rest you can archive onto a Data CD or DVD. It's a lot faster than re-encoding your files plus you still get better quality.
You can cycle your play list by copying a bunch of files from the DVD back to the HD. Every once in a whilie you can substitute those files for different ones from your DVD archive.

You could also create playlists for a CD and make each CD a different theme or band..
