I just did a Vista install to the 2nd disk in my system. The 1st disk has Win98 on it. However I unfortunately told Vista to do a clean install on disk 2 instead of a custom install and now my system will only boot up Vista even though I can see all my Win98 files intact on disk 1.
I did an MBR and track 0 restore to disk 1 but no luck it still just boots Vista.
Does Vista hide or move any of Win98 boot up files? I thought the MBR and track 0 restore would bring me back to a Win98 bootable system.
I found a hidden C:\Boot directory and C:\BootSect.Bak file. I think these are getting activated through the C:\bootmgr but I don't know how to get rid of this bootmgr program since if I rename the file I then get a file not found and the system then hangs there.
=======================
Ok I gave in and restored from a GHOST image and got my 98 bootable system and kept a Vista bootable system.
You can't use the Vista bootmanager directly since Win98 does not have a NTLR file like WinNT does. Supposed you can copy this over and it should work....I may try this out later.

i dunno if this helps, but maybe you should try installing microsoft virtual pc
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx
its free from micrsoft and they claim you can run operating systems on it from ms-dos and up, so i think you can install this in vista and then boot into 98, but im not 100% sure, i've never used virtual pc

Yes Virtual PC does work and you can boot up Win98 or other Windows OS's but I have my data currently all intact on the 1st disk. I just can't boot into it. I just want to restore that capability.

Actually I would be happy if I could just tell the Bios to boot disk 1 or boot disk 2. Right now it ignores what I tell it and only boots disk 2. I have a 3rd disk on my system also with Win98 and I call tell the computer to boot that without issue. I just can't get disk 1 to boot anymore.
Disk 1 Win98 -> won't boot -> just boots Vista
Disk 2 Vista -> boots no problem
Disk 3 Win98 -> will boot but it has different user software than disk 1 Win98

What kind of a system are you running Vista on anyway that it was running Windows 98 before?

Vista uses a completely different and new bootloader that pretty much nullifies other bootloaders including xp. You could try a small app that I used when I wanted to dual boot vista ult. and winxp MCE it's called EasyBCD (http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1). However, I'm not sure if it will work with win98. Just install the app in vista, launch it and create a new bootloader profile to boot vista and win98 on disk one. Restart your computer and the option should come up right after POST.

AMD 1800 with 768Mb memory. No issues running Vista for home use.

I tried that too. When I do that my computer BIOS doesn't see my disk 1. Not sure why since it is a Master. As soon as I add both other disks (even though they are on different cables) then it sees them all. Must be some screwy IDE motherboard issue.
