I am coming to the end of a Rogers cell phone contract.I would like to find a more reasonable priced way to have a cell phone handy, mainly for emergency purposes.Being a 'senior' I have no use for gadgets...games,text etc.Have the original phone in good working order.I am interested in info preferably by someone in the business. I rarely use the phone more than a couple of minutes at a time.Used to use a 'bag phone' that I won some years ago and paid Bell $5 per month for emergency only. Can't hope for that anymore!! Thanks.

Virgin (http://www.virginmobile.ca) offers pay as you go for 30 cents a minute. No other fees.
When you top up your phone
amount - good for # of days
15.00 - 45 days
25.00 - 90 days

Similar to what dbusguy said, go with a pay-as-you-go plan.

Every carrier offers them. Virgin has some of the cheapest around.

I bought my wife a compact flip phone for $100 and pay $10 per month. She calls me a couple of times occasionally but we both feel secure knowing she has it for an emergency.

Since you have a rogers phone, I would get it unlocked and go with Fido pay as you go, that way you don't need a new phone and Fido has, in my opinion the most reasonable pay as you go rates, you can even keep unused minutes each month and roll them over to the next month.

I have a Fido monthly plan that is $10 a month. You get to keep your unused portion if you refill your account before 30 days. You can either buy a $10 card or arrange with Fido to have your credit card debited $10 monthly.

The advantage with Fido/Rogers is that they use GSM which will allow you to own a phone that can be used in Europe.

Thanks for the info. Will try fido, asked at Virgin but they require you to buy their phone.

Except its important to point out that pay as you go on Fido does not work outside of Canada.

I meant to point out that an unlocked GSM phone will work in Europe with a SIM card replacement.

My wife got on a President's Choice plan at Fortino's. Costs her $25 every 3 months.

Exmortis....Had a look at presidents Choice Web site and this phone would appear to be the best value yet! Thank you. Just one question...You say your wife gets a $25 card every 3 months. The card is advertised to be valid 60 days. How does this work? Thank you again.

Ahh.. Maybe it's $25 every 2 months then. She's the one paying for it. ;) But you can purchase smaller cards if you don't use it that much. It's quite convenient being able to buy a card while doing the groceries. :)
