Hi, I just recently switched to Sympatico high speed. Now, I have noticed a few times now that my internet has stopped working, or on some occasions is very slow, some sites working, some not. As soon as I restart, it's fine. What could be the problem in this case?
Thanks

I'm OK here A couple of things to try before calling them
(1) Make sure all of your phones are filtered if you have a vista 350/390 phone make sure you double up on all of your filters if you have ExpressVu make sure it is filtered as well.
(2) Make sure your Modem is atleast 12inches from your computer
(3) Make sure your usuing all of the cables that sympatico sent you.
(4) If you have a router unplug your modem from your router directly to the computer and try a PPPOE connection
(5) Reinstall your ethernet card drivers
(6) Clear your tempoary Internet files and your cache
If you've tried all of that and your still haveing trouble I'd give them a call 310-surf (7873) and make note of what time the slowness starts it also could be an inside wireing issue
Good luck
you said you've switched to sympatico?.....therefore you didn't have it before. I've been having problems too. and here's my solution. I had a time where I couldn't even connect directly into my modem (which was a 100% functional idea, besides my router), so i thought maybe my modem died. Week later its working perfectly... so im thinking there was something being done in the area. cuz a piece of hardware doesn't just stop working then work perfectly

It depends, the Speed Stream 5200 had a tendency on overheating I think it was an issue with the capacitors, in that case sympatico would just replace it as a defective modem and send you a new one
I had one and at times it was like a foot warmer and that did cause disconnects.

the speed stream 5200 (e40) and not the speed stream 5200 (e42) has the over heat issue.
the later is the all black one and the former has silver on its top part.
also bell does have a minor dns issue and this can be gotten around by typing in these dns numbers.
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
a big issue is sometimes the line coming from the outside of your house.
a old bit of wiring can mess things up big time.

#1 is done on all phones, although how would I filter expressvu? I didn't hear anything about that.
#2 is done
#3 is done
#4 doesn't apply
#5 I will try
#6 I've done
It might be service related, although I doubt it. I will give them a shout regardless.
Thanks for everyone's help though.
If you have the original silver speedstream 5200 then you might want to try updating the firmware. See the original thread here (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,10294275)

You don't really need to keep expressVu plugged into your phone jack all of the time, only time you really need to is when you order movies.
I have ExpressVu myself
But your sympatico Tech agent will ask if its filtered.

I think I have figured out the problem. While I was waiting for a response from Bell, it acted up again, so out of idea's, I just tried shuting down Zone Alarm to see if it would work. Well what do you know, it did. I just don't get why it would be causing the problem?

Why does it have to be at least 12 inches from your computer?

Why does it have to be at least 12 inches from your computer?
Sympatico recomends that your modem be at least 12 inches from your computer due to EMF fields from your computer/electrical can cause performance degradtion.
Any sympatico tech will tell you this
