I'm thinking of going to vontage voip as my phone service but I have Sympatico HS for my internet, I have read you can get naked internet service from bell but have yet to find any information on it from bells website.
Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this connection ?
did you find you get slower speeds when going to naked sympatico service ?
Did vontage let you keep your number ? it say i can't transfer mine on there website. (london area)
just wanted to get some feed back from anyone on the topic, going away for the weekend but will check back next week for comments. Have a good long weekend everyone :tti:
For naked DSL there is no difference except that you have no active phone service. Vonage and other companies can only transfer numbers from certain areas, if you can't then you will have to get a new number. If you order it there will be no additional charge if you have the "Ultra" or "High Speed" plan and it may take up to 2 weeks.

Mike answers MiniMike's question!
To also add my comments .... VoIP providers cannot get access to all numbers in all areas. Same as here in Barrie. I couldn't transfer my existing number, so had to get a new one.

Thanks Mike,
any info on how you go about getting switched over to naked sympatico ? I have heard of it but I guess bell isnt providing any information about it :)
Is it something the voip provider does when they switch you over or is it something you have to call bell about ?

One thing that Vonage is strict about is not to interfere with Bell. If you apply with Vonage to transfer your phone number over, don't bug Bell about it and don't add/remove features from your line. The smallest thing will get Bell to reject the transfer. They're very sensitive. Best bet is to call Vonage and enquire about it. My guess is that only your phone service should be turned off after the transfer is complete, not your DSL service. But still check with Vonage to see if this is right.
The problem with VoIP over DSL is that it's quite a bit tricker to spread VoIP on all your phone jacks in the house. It's MUCH easier with cable Internet simply because you still need service from Bell on at least one jack (for the DSL modem). So unless you know how to rewire phone lines, you'll be stuck with one phone jack (the one behind the VoIP adapter) for one phone.
To order dry dsl the number is 1 888 590-2375. I'm not sure if that number still works though, that was months ago.
I have been waiting over a month for Bell to release my 416 number to Vonage. I have already paid 2 monthly bills from Vonage. Otherwise their $19.99 per month service with 500 minutes free calls in North America is great. I use Rogers High Speed.

I have been waiting over a month for Bell to release my 416 number to Vonage.
Did you call Vonage? I did and it turns out my order was stuck in their system and they never noticed until I called. As a result, they gave my next 3 months of service free and escalated my transfer request. Took 5 days from there.

Exmortis - Thanks, I have called Vonage and they are checking it out.

Thanks for all the help guys, I think I will give Vontage a call and see what they say about this.
Exmortis - My 416 number has now been transferred from Bell to Vonage. It took over a month but it is done.

Wow! That fast? Was it all triggered from the call you gave them?

It may have been triggered by the call. The online status still shows that transfer is not complete. I just disconnected from Bell and hooked my house phone wiring into the Vonage adapter. I plugged into phone 2 by accident and picked up the handset and a voice said, "you may be in the phone 2, try phone 1. The voice was correct. How is that for user friendly diagnostics.
I do have about 5 short beeps before the dial tone comes on. Based on previous experience, it will probably correct itself.
Glad to hear you got it working. Did you get the $39.99 plan? Unlimited long distance in North America :)

I'm on the cheapest $19.99/months. I did quick math and I'd have to use 800 minutes of Canadian long distance per month before I can consider moving to a higher plan. I don't talk that much out of province. :)
But I just cut my phone bill by more than half and it's awesome! For once, something is going down in price.

I'm on the $19.99 Plan 500. That is likely more than enough long distance for us.
I just got the two months credited to my account. With the $10 they credited for taking a month to transfer my 416 number, I now show a credit of $55.
