I am trying to edit my avatar in here, but the file is too large (not by much though). How can I surpress this to fit?

Resize it.

Use any graphics program to resize. You could even use Windows Paint.

Even better ... go to this free online resizer, resize and save the new image to use as your avatar: http://www.shrinkpictures.com/
