Take off the tank, and pull the base.

A friend once found about 5 golf balls in the trap, courtesy of his 3 kids.

Did you try a "snake"?

Try the snake first if that fails then you may have to remove the toilet from the floor as previously posted.

My buddy's kids flushed a pudding cup down and it caused the thing to plug, not bad enough to prevent water from going down but solids finished the job. Tried the snake but couldn't break the clog. Once the toilet was removed out fell the plastic cup!

Try digging out the clog with your hand. Just make sure you wash your hands afterwards.

You should be able to buy a pair of long rubber gloves at home depot, I'd start with that. I've never met a clog I couldn't clear with a plunger but maybe that's just luck.

Kids flush the darndest things!!!

my son flushed a hairbrush when he was small... no amount of plunging could move that!! Once we took the toilet off the floor we could see it in the bottom...

Like Rustynut & T_Totler suggested try the snake first.
If that fails then you will have to call in a plumber, which is expensive or do it yourself & unbolt it from the floor.
If you decide to do it yourself remember to buy a replacement seal.
Good luck.

i saw this thing at Home Depot the other day just for toilet plug ups..
it is like an aerosol but with chemicals in it and you stick it the toilet and press once and it says it will clean the clog... I think it was called "10 second plumber" or something like that... works for toilets and sinks it said...bout $10-15 for a can which lasts 10 clogs...

Get yourself one of these - way better than a regular plunger.

There is another solution, that thing will blow compressed air through the toilet using one of several nozzles they include in the kit. Just be ware to seat the thing properly and that you are using the correct adaptor for the item that is clogged ( one for the toilet and a smaller one for the sinks are included in the box )
Using the wrong one can result in an unwanted FACIAL!

That would only be a temporary solution, at best, if the item is something like a hair brush.

It would only rid you of the "ancillary" blockage. <eeewww>

Do you know what is stuck in the toilet? Kaka perhaps? If it is kaka, a plunger should do the trick.

#1 don't bother with the air canistars all plumbing fixtures are vented so unless the vent is plugged the air will go up the vent and will not fix the problem,if you cannot unplug the toilet with a snake you will have shut off the water to it,drain the bowl and tank(pail with small cup )remove the toilet and turn it upside down, try putting the snake in from the underside of the toilet while you have the toilet off might as well snake the drain.Make sure you have a new seal and bolts to put the wc back on

That depends if the clog is in the toilet or in the plumbing. If its in the plumbing then your right and snaking is the only way to go but if it's in the toilet then it can work but air canisters are the same effect as plungers but with a little higher pressure.

My question is after a week do you still have a plugged toilet?

If you do end up removing the toilet, replace the seal with a wax gasket not the rubber ones, they can dry out and end up leaking down the road.

sparky,I have been a plumber for 26 years and never used a wax gasket on a toilet. If the bowl is seated right you will never have a problem with a rubber gasket. The problem with wax gaskets is if you have to remove the bowl later on for some reason the wax is real messy to get off
