I have been running a Dell computer and I fried the motherboard and because I didn't want to wait I got a generic motherboard from our IT Dept. at work. Of course it wouldn't fit in the Dell case so got a new case and installed the new board and transferred all the components from the Dell.
When I booted up Windows XP Home crashed. I know when I got the Dell there weren't any Window discs for the operating system but there was a Dell disc that loaded the operating system.
Is it possible that the Dell disc had a propriatory version of XP and because the board was not a Dell that is the reason it crashed?
Thanks

Yep. Dell's arent compatable with anything.

likely because all the motherboard and chipset drivers in the registry are for the dell board. you might need a reinstall of the OS. you might be able to boot into safe mode and remove the drivers for the dell board and then instal the ones for the new board
Unfortinutely, you will have to buy a new copy of Windows XP. A change in motherboard requires Windows XP to be re-loaded but the Dell version of Windows XP will only install on a Dell computer.

Thanks people; I appreciate the prompt response and hope I can call on to resolve some of the other problems this fiasco has created.
BTW I did get a copy of Windows XP Professional and am using that as my operating system and while all my apps are still on the hard drive I am having problems accessing them......usually I will get an error message related to missing .dlls and a recommendation that a re-install is recommended. I have done so on the more important apps.
You will have to re-install all of your applications.

It might save more time Walter if you save all your important data and format and re-install your win xp. Might save a lot of problems and hassels.

A good idea dubsguy and it was something I was going to do. The problem I have is I buy most of my software online and I was planning to copy them to cd so I could follow your suggestion. Good intentions........
