I know nothing about DVD players, but I need to buy one as my old vcr packed it in today...I want to get a DVD/VCR combination as we use the VCR to tape all our television programs to watch later...I have an older Sony TV (8-10 years old) and I want to know if certain types of DVD players are compatible...I have no desire to replace my TV until I need to...I realize I'm a luddite, but need your help...

Most DVD players are Progressive Scan.

Your TV is based on Interlaced Scan.

You can only use the Cable Out. The composite connections will be of no value to you.

But I'm sure someone will prove me wrong. ;)

I had to buy an RF Modulator to connect my new DVD to my old television.
It was $50 and allows one hookup.

Other than that any DVD player should be compatible with your television.

Pretty much. If your TV doesn't have RCA jacks on the back then use an RF modulator. Otherwise any DVD player will work with it. I've hooked up a brand new DVD player to a TV from the 1970s without any problem (technically speaking I mean).

I'm not sure what you mean..."you can only use cable out" does it mean the DVD will not play or will only play through "cable out"...the TV has rca jacks...

Depending on the connections and configuration of your TV, some connections on the DVD player will not work. Cable out should work with any TV.

Since you have RCA jacks you're fine. I wouldn't spend a fortune on a player with progressive scan/hd features however, that would be a waste of money with your older TV.

Well what I really want to do is replace my old VCR with a DVDplayer/VCR combo which are priced about the same as a vcr (if you can find them), but I wanted to know if a dvd player wouldd even work with my tv.

You should have no problems, and the picture quality will be good. Use an SVIDEO cable if compatible.
