Well after many struggles with a few distro's I finally managed to get my wireless working .... but more importantly figuring out why it wouldn't work on the others.
Dell D620. Broadcom 43xx wifi chipset
Redhat AS 4 no go.. not with ndis and fwcutter using bcmwl5
Suse 10.2 nope .. same ...
Suse 10.3 ..... finally
10.3 is with the new kernel build. Has bcm43xx support built in. Comes with native ndiswrapper rpms as well.
Anyway. Turns out the issue with this particular chipset is due to the firmware revision. After downloading and extracting the latest 4.x and the older 3.x firmware using fwcutter ... everything magically worked. ... probably would have worked on the others too with the right firmware extract. The bcmwl5.sys from Dell was the first mistake
Just though to share the pain.
