Apple's build quality of the iPods has been nothing less than stellar... so far.

Oh comeon...tell me you were joking. So people sued them just for the hell of it?
<me talking to an ipod>Hello batteries...are you in there?

Child of Cupertino

They didn't build the batteries :P But yeah, you're right. I actually forgot about that.

Lithium ion batteries can be touchy when it comes to maintaining their lifespan. “Lithium-ion batteries are thermodynamically unstable", and hate heat and repeated full drain/recharges. A portable MP3 player, moreso than a laptop, is more frequently a victim of such hazards.

http://www.physorg.com/news4746.html

in this article:
http://www.wacotrib.com/spnsr/content/shared/shopping/shopsave/stories/0405ipod.html
it's said that Apple isn't the only one with "a dirty little secret" about the batteries in its MP3 players. All jukebox-style MP3 players, which store music on a hard drive instead of a flash memory card, eventually will die (if they use Lithium ion).

In terms of the fit and construction of the iPod itself, I bet it'll be fine. Now, if some dude sit down with an iPod -- or phone -- or PDA -- or any other MP3 player -- in his pants pocket? Well, all bets are off.

How is the iPod Nano powered? Lithium-ion batteries are reletively large. BTW if anyone wants a review, send one to me and i'll test the heck out of it. :hst:

Not these ones. Powered by Lithium ion:

Apple claims 14 hours of uptime. If you go heavy on the photo slideshows, however, that figure will decrease.

A free iPod "to test the heck out of". LOL :D Take a number and get in line!

I understand the profitability of staggering the release of technology and design, but I always feel I'm getting ripped off a little no matter when I buy :)

I almost want to buy this, I almost want to buy ipod's new cell phone... but maybe I'll wait until they come out with the tie clip sized devices.

you could wait for the next 40 years. If you like the item, and it does what you like, buy it. I don't understand the notion that because the next one is 5 mm thinner, has twice the capacity, sudden;y makes my cool ipod stop working the way it did yesterday.

Surely, no other system would fare any better.

I wonder if they reset the nano of the display (at some earlier points in the process) might have come back to life?

Depends on the amount of damage. Smashing an LCD screen can permanently damage it.

Child of Cupertino

If the glass BROKE, then sure. It's hard to tell if the glass broke or was "just" severely scratched. Regardless, I suppose data connectors to the display would most probably had been loosened.

Still, the build quality is quite amazing.

I want one, but will wait until they have a larger capacity. I currently have a 15gb 3rd Gen iPod, and I don't think I could down size my collection to 4 gb.

Umm then don't carry around your entire collection? Or buy 2 iPods.
