I recently purchased a used IBM X30 with a CDRW/DVD Drive. The drive plays CDs and burns them. It also plays SOME DVDs but not all ... especially ones burnt on home computers. Is there something I can do .... some settings to change ... some drivers to download ?? Help please !

Thank you !

Check and see if there are any firmware updates for the drive.

How do I do that?

You can use this:
http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en
to find out the make and model of the drive (if you use Nero, you can also use their InfoTool to find out). Once you know that, you can Google for the firmware, go to the manufacturers site, or try something like this site:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/drive/
Follow instructions carefully and you should be fine.
Other than that, there's probably not a lot you can do other than making sure you use quality media. Some drives are very picky about media.

this page may help.

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/search.wss?q=IBM+X30+&rs=0&lang=en+en&loc=en-US&from=tss&ics=iso-8859-1&cs=utf-8&cc=us&search.x=48&search.y=12&search=search

but if you suspect the drive was replaced look in the device manager
cdroms it should give you the names.

if not do a google for everest this program will show all the
devises in your system. then go to the cd manufactures web site
and check for updates.

Thank you !! I'll try this over the weekend ... hope it works !!

If I switch to a DVD RW, would that make a difference?

Probably - most dvd rw drives now are very good and a lot less picky. Also, if what you have is an older drive, it could just be on it's way out.
