It's one of the little discussed topics after every disasters, but it's one of the most important too.

I am going to make an appt.

I think that's what's not helping the canadian blood services. Having to make an appointment. We already have busy lives to go out of our way for it.

And keep this in mind, though... While you may be a universal donor, you are extremely limited as a receiver. If there aren't enough people like you to give and build a supply of O- blood, you may be in a very bad situation when you need blood.

Haven't given blood in many years and, like Athlon2600Plus, my meds prevent normal frequent donation. But I am listed "on call" because I have B- blood type and they would likely use it despite the few meds I take.

I gave some like a year or so ago. I would do it again, cause hey, one day you might need it, but I have to wait now cause i have a recent piercing. Its really not that big of a deal, an hour of your time just may save someoens life. I didnt feel any different after they sucked my blood, and I'm a smaller girl and they were worried that i might get dizzy. But I didnt, and they had FREE cookies and juice. :eri:

Never given, except for the incessant testing by my GP. :(

Question:

What is the universal blood donor type?
Mary / Pennsylvania

Answer:

There is no universal blood donor type. Donated blood is routinely classified by type as A, B, AB or O, and as Rh positive or Rh negative. In the past, people with Type O/Rh negative blood were considered universal blood donors. This implied that anyone, regardless of blood type, could receive Type O/Rh negative blood without risking a transfusion reaction.

But scientists now have a much better understanding of the complex issues related to reactions to incompatible blood donor types. Even donors with Type O/Rh negative blood may have antibodies in their blood that cause serious reactions.

Before a blood transfusion, small samples of the recipient's and donor's blood are mixed to check compatibility. Doctors refer to this as crossmatching. Despite these precautions, an adverse reaction may still occur.

I went on the 24th of June, but was turned down, because I was one day shy of six months from having been in Mexico. Risk of Malaria. I was pretty worried for the next 24 hours.

For all those who haven't given blood.. and want to.. no need to hesitate :) It is not a bad experience at all.. interesting sensation afterwards lol :D For all those who haven't and won't.. why not? You could be saving lives and at no risk to your own.. I just do not understand that way of thinking.. :)

And giving blood is actually good for you as it stimulates production and you get fresh new replacement blood. And for those worried about HepA, HIV, etc, you can't get anything by giving.

Every two weeks????? :rrg:

No wonder you are in poor health.

Are you sure you aren't confusing donating with blood tests???

Does Mosquito bites count?

Seriously, I used to be a regular donor, like clock work but due to meds I have now been turned down. I even asked if there was some way they could use my blood for experiments or something. Of course they though I was nuts.
