ok i thought the trouble i've been having was because my hd was too full but now i'm not so sure.

it started a while ago when my dvd player on my mac stopped working. it just wouldn't read dvds. not sure if this is related or not.

i have a 40 gig internal hd. it was so full that i had only about half a gig left. now i hav about 3 gigs free and the same problems. here is what happens:

if i open the finder and click on macintosh HD the finder just freezes every time. if i try to save or load a file, the application freezes. and, i can't shut down my computer. i really need to start recording soon. what do you think the problem is?

p.s. itunes works fine though.....

Is it data or software that's filled your hard drive? Maybe it's time to update that DVD player to a burner.

it is data. mostly mp3s and saved audio projects i've been working on.

Any hard drive needs some free space to work best. IMO, a small few G on a 40G drive is a bottleneck. I'd run any diags you can on the optical drive and replace it with a burner if it's kaput.

Tim is likely your best bet for specifics on the technical end. You could PM him and he'll likely be glad to help.

i can't even run onyx to try and help my HD. it seems that anything i use that needs to access the HD ends up freezing. except for itunes, which i find strange. i guess i'm gonna shell out a few hundred for an external HD and reload everything and see if that helps. by the way, do you guys know if Lacie hard drives are any good?
