Been talking along time about giving Rogers the boot. I think I narrowed it down to VIF Internet services http://support.vif.com/high_speed/resprices.php?lang=.

I know some of you here use it already.

Anything to consider before I do the plunge?

From Rogers on cable to VIF on dsl
that's quite a jump.
are you sure you can get dsl?

I'd personally get VIF up and running, let it over lap and only cancel with Rogers if you're satisfied.

Also check with Rogers, I thought I'd heard that they now require 30 notice.
In other words, once you call and cancel, you still have 30 days of service.

So, if you're sure you can get dsl, then you might want to cancel with Rogers and not sign up with VIF for 30 days. (if you don't want an overlap)

Big choices.
Good luck.

Not sure what you mean with jump. Difference in speed or service?

Checked on VIF site and they claim that my fax number works for their service.

Was thinking of downgrading the Rogers service to the Ultra Light and see how the VIF thing goes. It totals up to a couple more bucks a month until I decide which way to go.

Just can't take the cap.:vxd:

I have sympatico HSE (3Mbs) same speed as your VIF I'm finding it very consistant and stable even at peek hours I have very little downtime and unlimited Bandwith

your fax machiene will work fine with your DSL service just make sure all of your phones are filtered and you should be OK

Thanks for your input. I think the phone line would work too but since it is unlisted they say it doesn't work.

But the fax line is better anyway. I only need one filter there.

Thats odd, My home phone number is unlisted ( Bell is my provider) and HSE is installed on my line.

I dunno perhaps its different with VIF?

Bell will let you check availability on their website for any listed or unlisted number. Other ISPs do not display availability for unlisted numbers, so you have to call the provider to confirm availability.

I am aware of that thankyou :) However I had to confirm with them before I moved if HSE was even avaliable here.

FYI You can check by by postal code as well :)

Sympatico needs 30 days for cancellation as well. However, I was told it will credit you back the time you haven't use.

You can still use it the full 30 days after you've cancelled up untill the cutoff date.

I signed up for VIF the other day. In 4 days, I should get my service. I'm switching back to DSL from Rogers.

VIF offers the 5 meg service for $29.95 (if you're line supports it.) They used to advertise the 5Mbit service on their website, but since taken it down as some lines are apparently unstable to support the 5Mbit. If your line can support 5Mbit, you get 5Mbit for $29.95/month. Damn good deal, if you ask me!

Great, did you call them or just sign up over the net?

I signed up over the net, and they called to confirm the order 2 days later.

Well I signed up with Vif and they called today to confirm.

They were telling me that my phone line wasn't setup for DSL and that I should check with Bell as to why not.

Like I already mentioned it says that my unlisted phone number doesn't work, while my fax # does. So I even mentioned on the order under additional comments that I want to use it on my fax #.

So when I told him that he was like aah yes that's what it says here. Yeah ok no problem you should be up and running within a couple of days.

Well lets hope the rest of it works fine.

I actually went to the site....I couldn't find any information regarding email. I just thought someone here that subscribed to it might know for sure but thanks for putting down another link to the site though. :vxd:

Antispam Service - FREE (from VIF website)

No one likes publicity in their inbox, no more than in their mailbox. That's exactly why we now offer you a spam filter that will help you keep your inbox clean of publicity. The system automatically analyses each email to detect known signs of a spam email, and places them in either the "spam" box or your inbox. You can view the spambox from our web page.

The system also lets you define a blacklist (which blocks any email coming from the defined emails) and a whitelist (which, on the contrary, deposits the emails from those addresses and drops them in your inbox untouched).

There are many DSL ISPs.
Before Rogers I used Information Gateway Services and was very happy with them. The only reason I left was lack of DSL highspeed in my area.
