View Full Version : Earring, which ear?
Some friends and I have been having a serious discussion here.
Men, one earring, on which ear should they wear it?
I'm told that it has a specific meaning.
I've been watching TV and it seems to me that it can be
either ear.
I'm a woman and I wear one just on my left ear. I like it there because of the way I wear my hair. I'm told that has a specific meaning also.
Everyone seems to have a different opinion.
Can someone tell me what the trend is and what does it mean.

For men, I have heard the saying "Left is right, and right is wrong".

I remember that it used to be commonly known that a single earing in the right ear meant you were gay. Nothing wrong with that. That was 15 to 20 years ago, and quite frankly, I'm no fashion/piercing expert, but I just don't think it means anything anymore. Piercing has gone out of control and I don't think the idea or meaning of a single earing in your right ear has been maintained overall. More importantly, even is there was still a commonly known fashion edict of where you wear a single earing and if you're not gay and you wear an earing in your right ear, you're making a statement that you're going to wear your earing in whichever ear you want. I don't think piercing fashion rules apply anymore. Do you think people with piercings or without would even know to make the assessment that your right ear earing means something? Or, just get both ears pierced and where one in each ear :)
If a person happens to be gay and you want to wear a single earing in your right ear because you are gay, then I guess you can but the meaning won't be caught be many people anymore unless you explain it to them, and that kind of takes away 99.9% of the affect.
The fact that any specific meaning for wearing a single earing in one ear or the other isn't commonly known is a clue that there may not be any "rules" anymore.
There you have it. 200% over-analysis of single earing wearing. Now back to your regularly scheduled short replies...

Long live the hair bands!
Anyway, to the point of the original question, I don't think it matters what ear you pierce any more. Piercing is such a part of today's lifestyle, the question isn't what ear do you want pierced, it's what body part would you like pierced. The only thing I can really think about being frowned upon for guys, is belly buttons...... dudes don't do that.
