Get ready for NHL jerseys that look like NASCAR race cars :ntb:

Things like this were inevitable with the introduction of big screen HDTV.
Problem is that it does not address the fundamental problems of the economics of pro hockey which are decling TV viewership and paid attendance.

I remember when they started splashing the rink boards with advertisements. Took awhile for me to get used to that. Quite tacky at first but I've gotten used to it.

That did not bother me.
I watched a lot more international hockey at that time and they had paid advertising on the boards long before the NHL adapted it.

never happen
The day the NHL advertises on jerseys is the day I stop watching NHL hockey. I don't think it would ever happen, either.
I would not mind that. They do the same thing on soccer jerseys, and I enjoy watching soccer

Don't some Nike sponsored NHL players already wear the Nike "swoosh" emblem on their jerseys now? :rrg:

The Ottawa Senators are all ready set up to advertise Trojan condoms, they almost have the same logo.

And the Leafs are a perfect fit for Maple Leaf Foods.

since the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan is the largest shareholder of both Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment and Maple Leaf Foods.

Holy crap, that's truly laughable.
Hope it happens. http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/MouseMeat/Smilies/terical.gif

In a capped system I can't see the need for this. Not making enough millions? Lower the cap. Seems simple to me. The real problem is selling the game, not the advertising. I’m sure they would lose at least a few fans to this, and I don’t think it’s worth it because it doesn’t address the fundamental problem. Stranger things have happened but I think if they focused more on selling the game south of the border everything else would fall in line (e.g. increased revenue via advertising they already have).
I agree that HD TV must have advertising Execs’ chopping at the bit for clearer, now larger space in front of the eye balls. My only hope is that NHL Execs’ ignore quick cash grabs and look at the bigger picture containing the solution to a larger cash grab.
Either way - I drink my beer, I watch my hockey.

The salary cap was about cost control.
Selling advertising is about revenue maximization.
It's all business. Increase gross revenues-decrease costs= profit maximization.
Somewhere in that equation, the occasional hockey game will be played.

Considering Reebok makes their uniforms, I doubt it. :)
Yes, but I do recall seeing the Nike "swoosh" on some jerseys before - probably before Reebok got the exclusive contract.
