I am baacckkk!!
A month has gone by without my comp!!
I posted earlier that my HD connector broke off on my Raptor-X, so that was toast!
It must have been during my out burst of curses that the computer Gods decided to teach me lesson, because the next day my striker was also toast!!
I had given my spare MB to a friend a couple months back!!
I checked on Evga site & saw I was number 340 in the lineup for the 780i MB!!
Two days later I was informed by Evga that my 780i was ready!!
The next day my new case from Coolermaster the Cosmos S ( I have been waiting for them to improve the cooling on the 1000 ) arrived, talk about timing!!
Everything is at stock at the moment, until I get settled!!
I will be posting some pics soon!!
quicksilver, good to have you back..
That would be some good fortune you had. Nice rig you ended up with on top of all this. Can't wait to see the results.

I wanna see pics.... I got my Cosmos S as well, but am waiting for my friend to take my cosmos 1000 and 850W PSU. Everything in my rig will be the same save for the newer case, and a newer 1250W Coolermaster Real Power Pro 80Plus PSU. Quicksilver, you should do a NB fan mod now, before you get all the parts installed, and make sure that your MCP/SPP heatsink is on properly.

Yup it all hits the fan at the same time and then suddenly the gods have mercy and things suddenly get better.

my cousin just got a 1300 watt PS , i did not realize they went that high. I think they have a 1350 now too.

How the heck did you get the plutonium to run that thing...lol.

I was wrong. They have 1600 out now. This is a nice PS but expensive :)

I dont like ultra. I've had their powersupplies and nothing is good but the looks. I had max 5months life on mine, then I RMA'd it and sold the new one to get my enermax liberty

What is that drives people to get bigger and bigger PS's when 700W is more then enough for most people? I mean your wasting all that unused power aren't you?

bragging rights perhaps?

It all depends. I know running my cpu @ 4200Mhz with everything else stock, my current PSU loads out at close to or at 700W already. And for stable systems, overhead on a PSU is definately key. An underpowered PSU can hinder OC's for those enthusiasts out there, but for regular users, yeah, 700 is usually more than enough. If I were to up my RAM, and video cards I'm sure I would shoot close to the 850W mark ON LOAD, but I don't think I'll ever get there.

Thanks Dan!
Thanks for the reminder about the NB fan mod compygeek, I will be getting on it that's for sure!
I thought my old OCZ 700w Powerstream PSU would be enough but with all my gear I prefer having the overhead of xtra watts, less strain on the psu!

Personally, I think you are right bragging rights has somethign to do with it. I mean there are just some gamers out there that just feel the need to boast and brag about thier systems. I myself have the 850 OCZ and it is more then enough for my needs. But , it still is nice to look at some of the expensive stuff ect.

Compygeek, while I don't disagree with you I really think most people don't really know how much overhead they have, unless they are engineers and and can measure the voltage load on their system. Sure overclocking a system strains the components and that in turn puts more load on the PS, but even so, at 700W unless your running tri sli, I still think you have plenty of overhead, even for your system overclocked. All the online power supply calculators I've ever used have told me that with 5 hard drives, two optical drives, a big cpu fan, lots of case fans etc, that I have plenty of overhead in terms of watts left over, factor in over clocking and still I have lots left. Frankly I think most people just get sucked into the 'bigger is better and I gotta have it' trap that most consumers get trapped into. Look at digital camers, people have a 4 or 5 megapixel camera and a 7 or 8 megapixel model comes out and people think, oh well its more megapixels that must be better then what I have, so they have to buy it, not realizing that they are wasting those extra megapixels with their little 4x6 prints.

Still in the end if a bigger power supply is say 10 bucks for a extra 100 to 200 watts then why not.
Its not like say a year ago when prices cost alot more.
Now memory is dirt cheap and prices on many other things like harddrives, power supplies and other hardware isn't much more.
It never hurts to future proof a little and hey there is nothing wrong with bragging rights...lol.

I ran my spec in an online power supply calculator - it came out to 700W. I do see your point though. 150W extra does seem like ample room, but everyone knows you don't want to keep your PSU maxed in the long run (mind you unless you do straight up stressing on all your computer components 24/7, you'll never really overwork your PSU to that extent).

You want quality, not quantity.
With PSU's Quality is always a factor, and thus you should buy good sturdy high quality PSU's regardless of the Wattage. However, you CANNOT disregard quantity when it comes to building an enthusiast rig. If you're gonna build something that'll suck the wattage right off the wall socket, there's absolutely no way it'll run stable on load with an underpowered PSU, top quality or not.

nice photos. very nice machine too...
your CPU alone is worth the cost of my entire machine...well almost lol
