Hi all does anyone know of any regulations on burying your pet on your own property?
Our 20 year old cat is dying and we would like to bury her at home.
Can't seem to find any info online.

Your best bet would be to phone your by-law office and find out.

Sorry to hear about your pet. 20 is a good long life for a cat but it probably still doesn't seem long enough in your eyes.

Thanks, never thought of that.

Yes she has had a good life.
She is barely holding on to life now, we had thought of having her put down, but she seems comfortable and not in pain, so we have decided to keep her at home and let her die in peace.

I dont know about any by-laws. But I know several poeple burying their pets in their back yard behind their shed or under their deck.

Just dont do it in the garden or the sand box. LOL :)

sorry to hear about your cat's imminent demise.... when the time comes, i hope she has a peaceful passing.
i was wondering about what to do if your pet dies at home as well, but because i live in a condo, i guess i would have to take mine to the vet to be "taken care of".
just too sad to think about though, even though death is a part of life.

Exactly.. who is going to find out anyway? Bury your pet where you like. Sorry to hear she is dying, but at least she is with family. :(

Good point, less the LOL.

Get a 24" patio stone to mark the spot, and protect the grave.

I think this is one of those things that I would ask for forgivness for rather than permission.

Amen to that lovey :bsu: ...

It's not like you're burying truckloads of toxic waste. I'm sure many people bury their pets on their property.

Al, sorry to hear about your cat :(. You say she doesn't appear to be suffering, but are you really sure?

Cats have a high threshold for pain, and, I've read somewhere once that purring can signify either happiness or pain.

Sorry to hear.

If I can offer a couple of suggestions...

First, I would let the vet take care of 'the end'. It is quick and completely painless. This way you are 100% sure your pet doesn't suffer, as I'm sure you wouldn't want that. Even difficulty with breathing when the time comes may haunt you in ways you're unaware of now.

Second suggestion, you want your cat on your property with you. Instead of burying, you might want to consider cremation. Then you can keep your beloved cat with you in your home. My best friend still sleeps in my bedroom with me just like he did 8 years ago. Just in a different form. It is much more comforting to me.

I've had to look that up a few years ago. Generally on your own property you can bury small animals like cats and dogs and anything smaller. Larger animals require alternate methods.

I would avoid taking the cat to the vet as I have seen what they or shelters etc do with the bodies afterwards. I don't think I could handle the thought of what happens with the body after.
Shall be interesting when it comes time to to bury Kaos.

Maybe I'll have an actual coffin made for him.

Advanced sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry also to hear about your pet. Having lost a few of my own, I know what you are going through.

Cremation may be the better method as you don't know if you will be living in the same location in 20 years time. A friend of mine had his cat cremated and has stipulated that his cat be buried with him when he goes.

If you have the cash to spare, there is a company that will turn your pet's cremated remains into a diamond gem stone that you can wear as a ring or pendant. Their website is:

http://www.lifegem.com/secondary/beloved_pets_main2006.aspx.

The price is a bit intimidating but it would seem that there are enough people willing to do it to keep them in business

Thanks all for the suggestions and your thoughts.
Smokie passed away at 1:00 pm today.(Couldn't post earlier as we had a power outage and then off to work.)
We have decided to bury her in our yard. We have a large lilac tree that she loved to lay under so that will be her final resting place.

I'm very sorry to hear, Al. At least she was in the comfort of a loved one's arms when she went. The lilac tree sounds like a lovely resting place.

Sorry for the loss of your beloved pet Al. We had our cat Patches put down a few years ago and had him cremated. Where his fav place to lay in the garden was, we placed a concrete (cast) cat as a reminder. His ashes remain on the mantel with his pic.
