Hello,

I'm running Win 98 2nd ed..

I'm pretty sure i have been infected with something. When I rebooted my machine all of my startup programs lock, "the program committed a fatal error" message comes up. If I close all of these programs using ctr-alt.-del. the desktop displays as normal. But My Norton AV is disabled and won't open. Also IE 5.5, and Netscape won't open. For some reason Firefox can still open. Some programs will open but others begin then just crash. i think it has something to do with a rundll32 file.

Does anyone have any idea what this virus is.
I ran NAV in safemode but it detetected nothing.

I tried a couple of online AV scans but they don't seem to run with Firefox.

I'm at work so I can't attach a Highjack This log, but I could get one if it would help.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance for your help

On-line scans use active-x, which Firefox does not support.
There is only 1 on-line scan that will work.
Housecall Java:
http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/housecall/housecall_launch.php
Use that link only.

As you have W98se you have the additional option of scanning in DOS.
You can download Trendmicro emergecy rescue.put on floppies.
Then boot from floppy
You'll need 7-8 floppies. Instructions download:
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/emg-disk.asp

You could also use F-prot for dos,
Easy way is to download trial of f-prot for windows.
Instructions here,
Scanning your computer with the DOS/CMD scanner:
http://www.f-prot.com/support/windows/I_have_virus.html

We might be able to use hjt.
Won't hurt.

Is "the program commited a fatal error" the complete message that comes up?
Why do you think it has to do with a rundll?
.dll files are small instruction files that are easily corrupted. If it is a .dll, it would help to know which one is causing the pain.

you could also download f-prots free dos antivirus scanner

http://www.f-prot.com/download/home_user/download_fpdos.html

extract to c:\f-prot

execute f-prot.exe in dos
