OK, this is going well! I got a movie downloaded using Transmission, and it plays fine with movie maker in Ubuntu (which I upgraded to the latest version 8.04)
No, my question is, how do I burn this movie to a DVD that I can use in my regular DVD player and watch on my TV??
I really do appreciate the help Lil Wolf has been great!

Don't know what is in the Ubuntu repositories but look also for Xshrink and K9copy. Fun tools.

k3b won't convert the movie to DVD-Video though, will it?

No, it won't. K3B does a good job at burning data, images and music CD's and that's about it.

Actually I did manage to burn my movie on a DVD with K3b, but first I had to convert the AVI files to an ISO image, then burn that ISO on a DVD and "presto" it works fine in my DVD player on my TV. So, as usual it's live and learn! I really like this newest version of Ubuntu.
I don't know why a lot more people aren't using it. Where can you get an O.S. that works this well, that is loaded with all the software you need to do almost anything!

Wait a second. That doesn't make sense. Converting the AVI to ISO is just like burning the AVI right to the DVD as data, and K3b can do that just fine.
So are you playing these DVDs in your DVD player as AVI/DIVX movies? If so you didn't have to convert it to an ISO first, you could have just burned the data to the disc.
Or, did you convert the AVI to DVD-Video as an ISO? if so, what program did you use?

What K3b won't do is convert AVI's to VOB's. However, Ed's player can probably play a multitude of multimedia formats (like most of them nowadays).

Exactly, I'm asking if the program he used made the AV into VOB AKA VIDEO_TS AKA DVD-Video.
Because if he simply made an ISO that was a step he could have skipped.

Goto Sun.com and buy a workstation. Thats what I did, cost me a small fortune, but it never crashes and the software i use has been tested by SUN and are free of errors, can i say reboot every two years :)
