actually you can get the 9800gtx for 249 (well the evga one unfortunately you will need to wait 5-10 days though) any idea on the cost of the 4870? i want one of those, but if it will be more than 300 ill take 2 of the 4850s.

In your situation Jamie, you could do one of 2 things...

1) you can do what you suggested - give your son your 8800GTX and grab snag up one of those cool new 4850's for 199 (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=30488&vpn=H485F512P&manufacture=HIS), OR:

2) Wait til the 9900GTX's drop to 199 and grab 2 of those for SLI action since you just got your 750iFTW board. It'll drop once the 9800GTX+ series comes out, as awesome mentioned. The EVGA 9800GTX already dropped to 219 on NCIX.

Either case is a win-win IMO.

I'm likin ATI's offerings this round, but I just don't play enuff games on my PC anymore to warrant upgrading at all... That and I already ordered my 08 Civic EXL.

The 4870 is cheaper and basically the same speed or faster.

One thing i have noticed is nvidia cards are getting bigger and more power hungry ,were something like the 4870 uses less.

Really hard to go wrong with either these days.

Actually all the reviews I have read, say the 4850 is faster than the 9800GTX running higher resolutions which I do..1920x1200 on a 24" Samsung...

The 4870 destroys the 9800GTX

well i use the vid card to run folding as well, in which case the 9800 gtx destroys the 48xx series, it may not be as fast for gaming, but i bought it for both, actually i rarely play games on my pc now, it is mainly on my 360 or ps3.

Depends on who is doing it but yeah at higher resolutions ati has always done better and the 4870 proves this well.

The other side of this is nvidia does better at open gl and if your going to be using stuff like 3dmax its a better bet since they love open gl.

i have used the ati firegl 7600 and the quatro fx1700 (both around the same $ ) and they performed equally well with opengl . My new FX 5500 is another story :)

got a nice ati 8mb mach32 for sale $0.50 :)
