View Full Version : Vaseline Oil For Food?

So I finally got my tomatoe squishier. Made in Italy and it's a good one. Thing is it looks like the instructions, probably translated from Italian, (which believe it or not I am reading) calls for 'vaseline oil for food' to lubricate the parts after clean up and before storage. I figure I better get some before I use the machine so that I can preserve its life. Anybody ever hear of vaseline oil? Know where I can get it?
Thanks,
Neal.

You might be able to find something similar from this description. http://www.ecvv.com/product/vp968720/vaseline-oil.html

Thanks mander, I looked at that site and that is probably the stuff. Now I just have to find it.

Basically a clear mineral oil is all thats needed and a very light coating. Get a dollar store spray bottle when you do find some for easy application.

Call your friend who already has the machine and ask him what he uses.

I have e-mailed him (I'm too cheap to call him long distance with every question) but seeing as we are both on holidays he is out of the house most of the time. Like in the garage doing tomatoes. I know that the tomatoes we bought are now sold out so he is probably hunting for more.

Your right mander, mineral oil will probably do until I can find the vaseline oil. Maybe I'll go 10W30.:)
Thanks!
Neal.

Ewwww....10W30. Was thinking more along the lines of something Pam vegetable spray but you also want something that wont go rancid if exposed to air.

I was only kidding about the 10W30. I just used the last three liters I had in the Boss's car anyway.
You do make a good point about making sure whatever I use does not go rancid. I used to get Mennonite unpasteurized unsalted butter and it would go rancid in short order. Not a taste you soon forget.

I just use veggie oil on the grinder I have and wash it before use.then apply new oil.

Yeah , Get some olives and grind them now that you got the machine lol . How big of a pot do you have for the cooking part and how many propane tanks are you going to use ?

If you use vegetable oil, it will get sticky over time, as well as go rancid. You can get mineral oil at the drugstore, food grade.

I have 2 tanks of propane and a 62 liter triple layer stainless steel pot. I won't need a pot that big but if things work out there is always next year. My buddy uses a big steel drum but just for the hot pack canning. Layers the jars between tea towels.

Delicious petroleum distillate. Enjoy.

That is my concern also! It's only used to keep the machine parts lubricated during storage. I sure wouldn't want any of the parts to oxidize. Of course, just as when the machine is new, you have to scrub it before you use it. When it is new I am sure it has some type of oil residue from manufacture.
My friend did get back to me and told me that in all the years his family has used the same machine they have never oiled it before storing it till the next year. It is an expensive little piece of equipment and I would like it to last so that it can pay for itself.

thats why I mentioned veggie oil. Because yes you do have to wash all the parts before use. I just fill the sink with warm water add a little dish soap.
let stand for 30 mins and clean. once cleaned there is no oil or smell.

Ken ver 1 5, I think your way is probably the route to go.
(I'm stumped now trying to connect the propane tank extension hose.)
Where's the aspirin?

Propane hoses have left hand threads. You are probably turning it the wrong way.

Just make sure you seal the jars good , use new ones .

The two hose connections aren't even close in size. Apparently I need an adapter of some sort. I am in Ajax and the closest place that sells parts (according to Superior Propane) is north of Orangville. So far I figure this tomato sauce is only going to cost me about $500 a jar.

Just bought the last two boxes of jars from Wal-Mart. It only took them about a half an hour to find a ladder and some one qualified to climb it to get the last box on the top of the shelf just below the ceiling. Thank goodness it only took me 20 minutes in the "Express Lane" to pay for them.
I wonder if Chef Boyardee has these problems?

The guy tells me that this is so safe you can eat. My family just might prefer that over my cooking. Got it at Hendrix if any one wants know.

Looks like a tube of vaseline. Again, mineral oil would have worked, since it is sold for human ingestion.

I was going to ask what are you planning to do with the food that you need vaseline on it. Then I realized you meant "Vaseline as food?"

Neal

It is meant to lubricate the machine parts for storage. Generally I would think you would only use the tomato squishier during the tomato season. It was an expensive little number so I would like it to last more than one year. I do not plan on eating the Vaseline for food, although some in my family might find that preferable to my cooking.
