As the title says, I received the ADSL modem from VIF today. It's a SpeedStream 5667 USB/Ethernet ADSL Modem. No manuals included except a printout on how to setup the network connection on one PC. I never setup ADSL before. No setup software included either.

I downloaded the modem manual and from what I can read, I can setup the user name and password from there. Then I figure I can hook up the router to the modem and I'm all set on all PC's.

Is this correct or do I need to do something else? Any pointers are appreciated.

simple enough.

put the filters they sent you between all the phones and the jacks.

plug the unfiltered line into the modem. (they should have sent you a splitter)

run the either net out to any plug in your router.

go into your router and under conection type select ppoa.

now type in the password and logon they give you in the area that should be just below the ppoa.

now unless i have forgotten something you should be done. (possiable..lol)

have fun

ps...if you don't wish to use the router you can log into the modem direct and type in the logon and password (can't remeber what thats modems ip is but a simple search on google will give you that)

Thanks smirnoff. So I hooked it up on my fax line. They sent the filter type which plugs into the line and then has one plug for the phone and one for the modem.

No cable included from the splitter to the modem. Will any phone cable do?

I hooked up the ethernet cable to the pc and went into the modem setup and filled in the what's needed. After pressing Apply, it said no DSL service.

The DSL and ACT lights aren't on, so I assume I do not have the service activated, right?

likely its not.

yes and phone wire will do as long as its under 6 feet.

our you saying the filter they sent you has a plug for the phone and one for the modem?

most adsl setups come with a phone jack spliter that plugs into the wall socket and then your modem is pluged into the one side and the filter for the phone is plugged into the other.

of course i haven't seen every type so i guess a combo filter is being used by some.

remeber all phones in the house need to be filtered.

just incase your filter is setup wrong you can try plugging the modem directly into the socket and unplug all phones briefly to check to see if its been turned on.

it normaly takes them a day after you get you gear to turn it on but call just to be sure they on the ball.

if thats what your filter looks like then you set it up fine.

also filters are needed on all phones in the house but this isn't the case if there not using the same line (you will know this is you pick up the other phone and can here whats being said on the other one).

if its on its own line then no filter is needed.

That's why I choose to use the fax line. Only one device hooked up to it.

Well even with plugging it in directly the the outlet no luck. Here's the link to the line conditioner

I guess I'll have to call them tomorrow.

I would wait until your activation date, after that if you still don't have a green DSL light then call up your ISP. Your setup should work fine unless there's a wiring problem. Also, make sure you didn't put a filter on your DSL modem. Trust me i've made that mistake.

sounds like you have it setup fine and there just alittle slow.

What is the activation date you were given by your new ISP?
You won't have anything til at least that day.... if it's already past, then call the ISP to see if there's been a delay.

Called this morning and was told that the activation date was supposed to be the 20th. Was promised to have service late today or tomorrow.

I guess time will tell.

Not impressed so far. The modem came in a Purolater bag (no box) and it already has scratches on it. The power supply looks dirty and the label on it is hacked up. The cable on it looks like it's never been used though??

Like already mentioned the RJ-11 cable (which I was supposed to get according to the rep) was missing.

The manual is none excisting and the only thing in writing that came with it was a bad copy of a bad printout on how to access VIF from one PC.

Not very professional.

Probably used, I would've just bought a DSL modem from somewhere else.

Typically between 3 and 5 buisness days it takes for them to do the loop order on your line. usually when Bell sends out their kit in the mail it will specify in the welcome letter when your activation date is and it usually arrives on or before that date ( express post)

Agreed. anything longer then that can cause speed issues.

Well today is the 26th and still no DSL from Vif. Went out before lunch and when I came home my wife said that Bell called since I had ordered High Speed Internet from them and they wanted to schedule installation??

Called them back and was asked if I ordered their service. No I said I went through Vif and am waiting to have it activated (I guess Bell has to do that?). She said no problem since you haven't ordered from us we will cancel the order. She also mentioned that the Bell installers were on strike?

So I called VIF and was put on hold for a while and they couldn't tell me why my service wasn't working. I asked them what line they put it on and of course it was the phone one rather than the fax I wanted them too.

Kind of anticipated that and check both lines as they come in the house and no worky even today.

I had placed the order with them on Sept. 12 and they confirmed with me on the 14th and still no service today. On top of it they already charged me for the full year service and then refunded me because they realized I was doing monthly.

When the guy couldn't come up with any answer I lost it and said nicely to cancel the none excisting service.

So much for getting rid of Rogers.

I assume Bell has to monopoly over the DSL access through the phone lines. Even if I use somebody elses DSL service does a Bell installer have to come to the house to activate the service on my phone line?

You're better off just going with Bell Sympatico. At least on average they make fewer errors.

If the Bell installers are on strike you won't be getting DSL from VIF, Bell or anyone. The installers have to install a DSlam on your line at the local Bell Central Office.

This isn't a VIF created problem. Compared to many ISPs, VIF has superior service. All DSL 3rd party providers are at the mercy of Bell activating through the local CO in your area.

They aren't on strike any more.

I was reading good things about Vif that's why I decided to go with them.

Too many things that went wrong with them in my opinion,

modem comes incomplete,
twice I had mentioned (in writing and oral) that I want my fax line connected and they still proceed with my phone line.

At no point when I talked to them did they know why my service wasn't connected. I mean wouldn't you check with Bell and they tell you that their people are on strike???

Being charged on my credit card for the full annual fee and then later being credited again tells me somebody isn't doing a good job. If I'd seen the charges before they credited me I would have had to call them and ask what was going on.

On top of it

Why would Bell call my house and ask if I ordered their service?

Maybe I'm not having a good day today but I must say I hate inefficient people and companies.

"Luckily" I didn't cancel Rogers yet. I'm leaving town on Wed. for 2 months and we would have had no internet service unless I paid somebody to install it once they decided to activate the service.

Going with Bell?

No I hate Bell and Rogers. They are getting too big. Went with my long distance to Sprint a while back and guess who owns them now?

Since VIF entered the order into the system, they could have made some errors. Either way from your house to the DSLAM, Bell maintains and activates your DSL service, the only difference is that the bandwidth and billing is provided by the 3rd party so you're stuck with Bell or Rogers no matter what company you go to.

I understand that but not all the money is going to Bell.

Sounds like the same problem I had this month with Pathcom.com. I got the service and it crash the first day after one hour of use. They spent the next two weeks trying to get the service back online, or so they said. Bottom line is they refund my money after I sent them a letter about Ontario's new Consumers Protection Law and price for modem since I had to buy it seperately for $100 buxxs
