I thought I would post this story.
my thoughts, will we all have a big screening room
in the future? how big a screen will the average
person have to buy to see a difference? now
I am not talking data storage here. I am talking
about the real practical need or want to have such
hi definition.

So your question is: Do we really need higher resolution?
Is that it?

In answer to that, "Do we really need higher resolution?" No we don't.
Do we want higher resolution? Most definitely we do.

The answer comes in multiple form depending who you're asking. From a technological point of view, moving away from NTSC is absolutely necessary. For one thing, moving away from interlacing and digitizing the signal completely is a necessity. But why not also improve everything while at it? Why make improvements, but stay at 480 lines? Doesn't make sense... But there's a lot more to HD than simply a higher resolution.
For a sports fan, the higher resolution is glorious. With 480 lines, there's only so much text can fit on the screen by the broadcaster. A higher resolution allows to fit more information with the image and in a much clealer, easy to read fashion. Not to mention being able to see a lot more of the game. In fact, Monday Night Footbal was among the very first to use HDTV.
However, NOBODY is forcing you to move. Nobody will ever force you to move. If you don't agree with the development of HD, then don't follow it. No sense in fighting it. If you're okay with your 27" TV, then stay with it.
As for the HD-DVD/BluRay debate, it's getting ridiculous. However, Samsung already promised to release a dual-format player if both camps don't agree to agree so there's no panic. Heck, that's what happened with DVD-R and DVD+R. They both co-exist just fine with dual-format players/burners.
