It seems that there’s something wrong with the way Warhammer Online runs. I’ve talked to people with 5-year-old computers and brand new $2000+ rigs; almost everyone is having problems with stuttering and framerate regardless of what graphics settings they have set. After trying some of these methods myself and helping a few friends get these modifications running, and seeing a vast improvement in performance (I was surprised to be honest), I decided to make a post about this so I could just link people here instead of explaining it to everyone individually

Just to note, I didn’t come up with these fixes/modifications, I just came across them on various Warhammer Forums. Thanks to Alaria for posting this on our forums before I could get this article up. The links to the original authors/threads are at the bottoms of this post.

There are a few easy fixes one can do to improve the performance of your Warhammer Online game without having to spend a dollar. Obviously the first thing you should do is update your graphic drivers to make sure you have the most recent ones. This can be done through the Control Panel -> Display Drivers interface simply by right-clicking on the name of your graphics card and selecting ‘update drivers.’ Once you have the latest drivers, there are a few things you can do to enhance the visual quality of the game, and boost performance and frame rate at the same time…

BuffThrottle

The first, and easiest, would be to download a mod called BuffThrottle. All this little mod does is delay the refresh rate on your buffs and debuffs in your UI’s buff bars. The performance increase is very noticeable, especially when in scenarios and larger scale battles. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to get this working for you:

* 1. Download BuffThrottle from Curse gaming here
* 2. Go to your Electronic Arts -> Warhammer Online -> Users -> Interface folder
* 3. In the interface folder, create a new folder named ‘AddOns’
* 4. Copy the full BuffThrottle folder into the new ‘AddOns’ folder
* 5. That’s it, launch WAR

That’s all you have to do, and should give you a nice performance boost. Now on to the next phase…

Custom Graphics Card Settings

The second fix that I’ve come across has to do with your graphic cards advanced settings. Customizing these settings will ensure optimized performance, and better graphic quality.

For nVidia graphics cards:

* 1. Go to Control Panel, and open the ‘nVidia Control Panel’
* 2. Select ‘Advanced View’ and then ‘Manage 3D settings’
* 3. Click on the ‘Program Settings’ tab, click ‘Add’, and point it towards your WAR.exe location. What this does, is only applies the changes to Warhammer Online, not other applications.
* 4. Set Anisotropic Filtering to 16X
* 5. Set Anti-Aliasing to something to you know your card can handle. 4X is a safe bet.
* 6. Set Texture Filtering to ‘Performance’
* 7. Set Negative LOD Bias to ‘Clamp’
* 8. If you are using an LCD Screen, set ‘Vsync’ and ‘Triple Buffering’ to ‘Force On,’ if you are not using an LCD screen, make sure these two are off
* 9. Apply the changes and close the control panel

For non-nVidia graphics cards, set your custom graphics card settings to something similar to this:

* - Anti-Aliasing: 8X, Temporal enabled, Edge-detect 24X
- Adaptive Anti-Aliasing: Disabled (It messes up the transparent parts of face polygons.)
- Anisotropic Filtering: 16X
- Catalyst AI: Disabled
- Wait for vertical refresh: On
- Triple buffering: Enabled

The next time you run Warhammer Online you should notice a significant improvement in performance and graphic quality. I expect that eventually Mythic will incorporate these changes into the client as standard, but for now changing them manually isn’t too hard, so it’s definitely worth doing if you are experience hic-ups and stuttering.

Works good in vista with my ATI chip in my vista laptop, though these custom settings cause hell with Warcraft and its new graphics update that brings it upto WAR graphics... however WoW will probably nolonger run higher than 2FPS on my tower instead of the 12-15 i was getting LOL.

see my sig for what I have to suffer with and laugh at my misfortune... I do.

btw, Core Hounds as Hunter Pets = Awsome!
