So I installed a RC of it the other day(before the release) on my laptop and I'm loving it.(installed Kubuntu). I'm downloading the official release right now.
I have to say with KDE 4.1. It's just smoking. I had tried 8.04 before on the laptop but I had issues with wifi/audio and some other stuff. But 8.10 fixed all that.

Anyone else install it?

Will give it a try.. I like 8.04. The download links from Ubuntu's site are incredibly slow at the moment though.

Luckily, I discovered a working backup copy of Ubuntu 8.04. (i.e. I got my modem, ATI video card and DVD working at the same time.)

Just an out of topic question:

When I was in college in 2000, Red Hat, Suse and some other distributions were very popular.
Are they still around?

As a matter of fact, we can probably say that Red Hat (which runs the Fedora project), OpenSuse (run by Novell) and Ubuntu (by Canonical) are likely the top 3. Someone else may correct me, but I believe that Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the number one commercial distribution.

Ubuntu 8.10 did not correctly identify my Windows partition and thus grub was pointing to the wrong partition. 8.04 did correctly identify my Windows Partition. Had problems installing the proprietary video driver for my ATI card (slow, non-responsive connection). I'm actually waiting for PCLinuxOS 2009 which has a testing release out. You can't get it now, that test is over.

I can't get the new version to install properly. After installing and rebooting, it just comes up with an 'Error 18' message.

It probably has something to do with the HD I'm using. For some reason it has an identity crisis. i.e. It's a 160 GB Western Digitial EIDE HD that 'thinks' it's a 32 GB drive.
(I could go on about what I've done to resolve the issue but suffice it to say that smarter men than I have taken a look at that drive and have come back scratching their heads as well.)

Both previous posts can stem from the problems of not installing the MBR on drive 0 when using multiple OS's. Obviously I can't say for sure that's what it is, just that it is one of the most common causes.

Edit: Skyguy, just as an afterthought, I ran into a problem with Grub when I switched to OpenSuse. You may need to update it manually.

I like testing new distro's when they first come out. Just set up Kubuntu 8.1 on my laptop [dual booting with Mandriva 2009].

Setup was a bit of a chore. Kubuntu booted to a black screen and I had to edit the xorg.conf file to get it to work.

Wireless was a bit difficult but eventually it worked with ndiswrapper and installing knetworkmanager.

Desktop now looks good. included software is KDE4 standard.

Seems to be working fine.

I did something to totally flick my system out so i reinstalled Kubuntu again and it took forever after the install to install files, I figure its due to it being released and people doing updates and what not. I have a nvidia and it took a while to install as well, not able to get updates from the server or totally locking up the install app, I ended up using EnvyNG to do it.

Not sure about Flash 10 but Flash 9.x works fine. Installed it from the repositories.

Quick time is also working after I installed kaffeine.

I have Flash 10 working as well as the ath5k wireless driver on my Netbook (Acer Aspire One if anyone cares). Flash 10 was easy, the wireless not quite as easy as it should be.

I've played with Ubuntu and Kubuntu 8.10 and I do find the graphical interface in Ubuntu 8.10 much cleaner/nicer and organized

but both are great operating systems!

I was playing around with Ubuntu 64x last night but to be honest without support for windows based games I couldn't use Linux. I suppose it's ok for surfing the net and getting email and stuff..

You need to use Wine or Crossover Office to enable support for Windows games inside Linux.

Not all games will work but quite a few do.

Does anyone know how to get the web cam working on an Acer Aspire 5315 using Ubuntu 8.10?

It worked out of the box on my Acer netbook. I tested it using Kopete and seems to be okay, though I've never bothered with webcams or instant messengers for that matter.

Don't try it yet April.. Kopete seems to cause crashes in 8.10.. let them work on it for a bit.

The problem is that you downloaded software for Linux. Much simpler to use the included Package Manager that comes with the distribution you are using to find software and install it. Using the systems Package Manager will ensure compatibility and needed support files.

The easy way as Linuxguru would have suggested is to use synaptic. Typing "JRE" in the search field will probably be enough to pull all the Java Runtime packages together for you and then just mark them for installation. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but these may even get installed when you select "Ubuntu Restricted Extras" as a whole from the Adept package manager.

After doing the above you can just trash the binaries (unless you really want to install Java the hard way).
