IHi everyone. I heard that there is a limit on the file sharing capability I was wondering what it was on ushare.

Thanks

In the *nix world, only your hardware would limit the number of practical users. I'm sure the people at Ushare are aware of this.

Thanks for getting back to me on this. What piece hardware would determine this.

I think you misunderstand what I was eluding to. In theory, you could have thousands (or considerably more) of users on a network. The limitations are things like the number of servers, available bandwidth and so on.

The point is that I'm sure that in your scenario (read; a home based server) it would not be an issue. Unless of course it is me who does not understand what you are asking. Your question is a bit vague since Unix/Linux was built from the ground up as a system that shares files (ala networking) with multiple users.

Exactly what is it you want to do?

Sorry if I was a little vague in my question. What I am trying to do is share my music files from my computer (running Ubuntu) to my xbox360. The problem that I am running into is that not all the music files are showing up. Plus some the songs are cutting out and skipping to the next song. The file format I have them in is FLAC

What network protocol are you using in Ubuntu? I would expect Samba. If not, you probably should be.

One of the more common causes for files not appearing is a permissions problems. Try using "sudo chmod -R 777 /home/user/directory" to change it recursively. The cause of this is using "root" to move files around.

Edit: Actually I should have said use "chown" if the cause is from using root to move files.

okay the only ones install are samba-common and smbclient. Then I take it that samba is not installed. (I presume) If I install samba will it conflict with ushare.

You should be able to find the balance of Samba (the server side) in the Ubuntu repositories. It may even work as it stands (won't hurt to try). The documentation is very good and can be downloaded from samba.org.

You should note that I know next to nothing about Ushare, so I have no idea whether it would suit you better or not. What I can tell you is that Samba is quite likely better suited to share files across platforms (specifically Linux/Windows). It also exacts as much (or as little) user control as you need it to.

I have never tried to hook up an Xbox to anything, so I'm in the dark in that regard. I'm simply getting the impression that it can be networked. If it can be connected to a Windows PC using smb then it can be connected to a Linux PC using smb via Samba ( I would assume).

If someone knows differently, I'd be glad to be corrected.

Oh yes, Ushare "should not" conflict with Samba. I would also assume that you have in fact checked permissions of directories and files as per my previous message.

I know when I set it ushare up it had something specifically for xbox360 in its config. Is there a similar thing in samba's config file. I am installing samba right at this moment. I did change the file permissions on that directory as well

Samba does nothing specific for Xbox. That said, if it uses Server Message Block (SMB) protocol then there is no reason (that I can think of) why Samba would not work. Just configure the Ubuntu directory in question as a share with the appropriate read/write access.

I confess at this writing I have not checked what Xbox does have in terms of networking protocols, I'll check the web at some point as we don't own one here (we do have a Wii).

when I start ushare with ushare -x this is what comes up.

Do you have a Gateway/Router/Firewall? Is traffic on port 49200 enabled?
