I have tried both Kanotix and Knoppix Live CD and both work fine.

1. Pleny to choose from. Try them all. It's all about personal preference.
2. Already answered.
3. Out of CD based distros, I use Slax (http://www.slax.org) and Puppy (http://www.goosee.com/puppy/).

for livecd kanotix, puppy and mepis are ones I have used. kanotix boots up fast.

you can also remaster your own livecd. pclinuxos is my fav. for this.

http://distrowatch.com/ is a good place to find what you are looking for. scroll down the right side and click the various distros for more info. they also post new releases on the front page.
