help please

situation is this:
tries to boot from optical drive with a windows install disk in it but then doesn't work, next I get the message "NTLDR is missing" press ctrl+alt+del
to reboot

I have a SATA drive as the only hard drive installed, it was in my last computer and ran fine, has about 160GB of data currently on it, no OS directories though
a DVD burner drive as the only optical drive
the hard drive and optical drive do show up in the bios
I have tried two different windows XP install cd's and get same response
If I could get a windows recuse disk made like the ones Windows98 makes that would be worth a shot, tried to do a search on the net but didn't find anything like that

I have had this problem before and the following worked for me...
1- Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2- When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3- Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4- Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
5- You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
6- Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

7- Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

You sure you set the BIOS to boot from the CD or DVD ROM first, and not the hard drive?

it was a bad optical drive, bought a new one and problem solved
