I have an older P4 that I will be replacing a failed HD and want to try for the first time an OS other than windows. I imaged an Ubuntu install CD for the fresh install. Any tips for a trouble free install?

Installing Ubuntu is the same as installing Windows these days.. a few mouse clicks etc...you should have no problems at all.. but if you do, then we could help :)

Lots of versions of Ubuntu around to try. Most boot to a live CD so you can play without installing until you find the one you want.
Ubuntu - Gnome desktop [Looks a bit like a Mac]
Kubuntu - KDE desktop [Looks a bit like Windows]
PC-OS, Ultimate Edition, and host of spin offs from the main distro.

Here is a link for some "must haves".

Follow these steps after you are installed and updated. Once installed (assuming you have an internet connection) Ubuntu will want to update itself as they don't make new images for every upgrade. If you haven't already done it, it will take a bit of time (perhaps 30~60 minutes).
After that, go to this thread and follow the instructions for your distribution version. In the end it will make your Ubuntu experience all the more pleasant.
If you don't understand what you're reading, post back here and we can explain it further and/or walk you through it.

The fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 went well except for the modem. Updating was lengthy, almost one hour, and it the highspeed connection was a bit slower than usual. This rig will eventually be used on a dial up connection so I ran scanmodem. Being a Linux newbie, the info scanmodem spits out is a bit baffling. I haven't as yet tried to set it up yet. The modem is recognized by scanmodem so I assume set up is possible.
The interface is straight forward but will take some getting used to.
