Good Day All

HELP!!!

I have a laptop that I dont use very often. I leant it out to a friend who put a password on the windows 2000 opening screen. Me...thinking I know what I am doing try to remove this password and the whole thing.

Now my problem is that I know the password, I just dont know what the user anme is, as of course it is a very long with oodles of numbers and letters. I can not get past the stupid password thingy because I dont know it.

Can anyone offer me any suggestions? I have tried the utility mentioned in a post I read this morning for login recovery, but if I am not mistaken it only gives you the password and thats not what I need. Besides I have to pay for that and I dont have a credit card. Go figure huh?

As I said I am using windows 2000 which will be reformatted as soon as I can get back on to the laptop.

Thanks for any suggestions/help you may be able to offer.

Can you get to the start up page that shows the users of that machine? If so you might be able to do as in xp where you use CTRL Alt Delete three times to give you access to the ADMIN login, if no password was ever installed to that then you are in. From there you can go and remove any and all users you wish.

My kid, did something we still don't know what, on the laptop and locked us all out.
I did set a password for the admin so once I got the admin up and used my password, I was able to earase all users and start again from there.

Trick I used to use in Win98 was to use explorer to find all files with a ".pwl" (password list) extention. Just had to delete them and then reboot. When asked for a logon, just hit enter and back to normal

Don't know if that would work on 2000 or not but could try if all else fails.

This is not possible if you can't get into the operating system.

How do I prevent the login screen from even starting up? I don't want any user names at all.
