I drove by the fire department the other day, and they had a big public awareness sign that read, "Are your house numbers visible?" I thought, "Who the hell cares? How about you just stop at the house that's on fire?!"

I dont get it? What if it were 3 AM and you lived out in the country and foggy at the time with just a small fire? Smoke at that point would not be visible because of the conditions but the reflective sign out front would be. I doubt you want them to drive around aimlessly until they were actually able to see flames coming through the roof.
I see what you are getting at Eggs. :)
Others are just pointing out that there is a good reason for numbers being visible. The FD is usually first on scene for most cases and do more than just fight fires hence the address visibility.

Wow! Tough crowd today!
:tch: How is this being a tough crowd? I am a bit lost and if this is funny, I guess I just need it explained to me in what way?

Out on Winston Churchill Blvd. it's hard enough finding the house numbers just to find the party.
Must be frustrating in an emergency.
Maybe EGGS isn't aware of how many health related emergencies our Fire Fighters respond to.
The information in this link updates all the time but it's surprising how many are medical emergencies and not fire..... http://www.toronto.ca/fire/cadinfo/livecad.htm
:)
I found it humorous. True a firefighter might not be responding to a blazing highly visible fire. It could be some other kind of emergency but I didn't take the time to analyze it properly. I am sorry, I will never laugh again.

lol. That made me laugh :d

Be careful! It's not funny, apparently.

Yes, I can see some humour in what he said, just follow the smoke and flames, but I look at the real meaning of it.
In Mississauga, for a medical emergency, the fire dept is first to respond and tries for an 8 minute response time and ambulance tries for a 12 minute response time.
Mississauga Fire is now advertising "See flashing light, pull to the right".

Ok, I can see the house numbers on the front of the house, but a few years ago the nutcases in London had a brain storm to force home owners to install house numbers on the rear of the house as well!
Hello! The only ones to see that will be the one or two neighbours that back onto your property, I think if I saw a fire truck driving through my back yard to find a house it would be time to move to a real community with intelligence. But where do ya find that?
It is good to simply laugh at the insane requirements local government requests of us.

When it comes to public safety, I too fail to see the humour in it... :rrg:
I can tell you that over 99% of emergencies (including fires) will not be visable from just driving by... the reason they want you to make sure your numbers are clearly visable... Seconds can make the difference ;)
Rusty, the idea of the numbers on the back of the house is for thos one or two neighbours back there... If they see a problem, all they can do is say it's a house on the street behind me... If you have numbers they now know which house it is :)
dbusguy... really? 8 minutes response time?? That is really bad.
All cities are supposed to have a goal of 4 minute responses.
London does a great job of that too... most are 2 to 2.5 minutes... except for a newer subdivition in the north that takes almost 6 minutes for first unit in.
They are working on that though... a new neighbourhood firehall should be going in there soon :)

House number on the back for those old properties with a lane and garage to the rear?

O.k. this thread is getting way too pathetic. He was obvilious saying this in humour. It's not like he posted it at the watercooler. Are we going to pick apart every joke that's posted in this forum now?

EXACTLY, to the best of my knowledge this IS THE FN JOKE FORUM. LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE. If you want to rant about it, then take it there to a rant forum. IF it is a joke you do not understand leave it at that. But please you anal retentive pussbags, do NOT pick apart a joke. There are other real life issues brought to life within jokes.......and you seem to leave it at that. If you have nothing better to do than to blaze the hell outta a joke that you found offensive then I suggest you either go thru the reams of other offensive jokes and pick them apart......or get a life. Or perhaps you could find your sense of humor and check your attidude at the door.
Lets all work together to keep the joke forum fun
***this public service annoucement has been brought to you by I LIKE EGGS....family member of 4 fire fighters....one of those that brought this joke to MY attention***

Sorry if I became the product of my own environment when people started to complain and whine about a joke.....a JOKE. However there was no attitude added to my response. That's YOUR opinion. Not my response.
There are plenty of other mildly offensive jokes in this forum that have been far worse that what this one had to offer.....it was stricktly a voiced opinion based on observation and did not require the huge outburst. This was not an abortion joke, this was not YET ANOTHER STUPID blonde joke, this was not an old lady shaving her coin purse joke....it was just some mild humor based on a service announcement. It was in no way meant to offend any one...and was certainly not meant to be such a huge issue.
But please for all you whiners....please start picking apart jokes to their fullest......I will be doing the same to yours.

I don't know... maybe no one ever told you before... but when you type in CAPS it the same as yelling; showing anger...
So yes, it does come across as attidude
If not intended, please don't write things like "IS THE FN JOKE FORUM. LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE." :)

Well DAN if THAT is HOW you FEEL about IT, then SO be IT. However I am not sure where you got your psychology degree, but if you believe that yelling or showing anger does in fact showcase attitude, then my friend I think you need a lesson in human emotion. Perhaps the lesson of humor can be taught to you in the same class as the one that shows you exactly what attitude means.
(incidently, Attitude is what I JUST gave you....telling you to go and F yourself.....that's just expression of what I believe you should go and do....there IS A DIFFERENCE DAN!)

Maybe what he means is who is the first to arrive on scene??
Around here, it does seem like the fire dept. often gets to the scene first, followed by the ambulance and the police.
