video editing software recommendations?

Just want some recommendations, on what kind of video editing/movie making software to buy.

I not only want to be able to edit movies from my digital camcorder, but I would also like to be able to combine or divide movies up that I've downloaded off the net.

any tips would be apreciated, this is somewhat a new field for me, and I wanted to give it a try.

If you have Windows XP perhaps give Windows Movie Maker 2 (Download the windows update) a try. It's not extremely powerful but its good to start.

I use nero vision express. it has worked for what I need.
