ok i'm going to go buy a hard drive. when i get back, how do i move all of my mp3s over to it so that itunes will still read it?

a weird thing happened last night. i opened itunes and it was completely blank. there were no tunes, or playlists even. the library was blank. the mp3s are still on my HD though. anyone know what that is all about?

by the way, there is also other data i need to move to the HD too so if there is a different process for that could you please tell me? hopefully all of this my computer problems will be gone and i can get back to working on my cd.....hopefully.....thanks.

the information displayed inside itunes is stored in an XML file in the folder where your music is located. If that file has been damaged moved or deleted then itunes will not show any MP3's or playlists ect. You should be able to fix the issue using the "consolidate Library" command in the advaned menu. inside itunes.

This should force itunes to search your HDD for music and recreate the library.

thanks. i did that but still nothing happened. in MUSIC the itunes library is still there but it says (damaged) beside it. how would this happen?

so does anyone know how to move a LOT of stuff from my hard drive to an external one? i just bought a 300 gig HD so that should do the trick for a while lol.

ok i bought my HD, hooked it up, turned on my mac, and a message came up saying that i have inserted a disk not readable by this computer or something like that, then dissapeared.

how do i know what is going on with this HD? i have spent over a thousand dollars on all the software i needed, then a few hundred for this HD, i am going to go crazy if this isn't going to work.

If you're having both drives installed and connected at the same time off the same ATA chain, leave the first as Master and set the new hd drive to Slave or Cable Select if it's being connected via the same ATA cable. Slave or Cable Select drives can be used as boot volumes just like Master set drives.
If you're removing your first drive, then yes, set the new one to Master. Once the new drive is installed and setup correctly, hardware-wise, simply boot from the Tiger v10.4 DVD and go into Disk Utility. Select the new drive from the right and format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)." Then run the Installer. The new drive needs to be formatted as such first, otherwise the Installer will not see it as valid drive to install upon. (or see the drive at all, at that.)

FYI- sometimes after formatting a new hard drive, you'll have to restart your Mac first before the Installer will see the volume as a valid drive. So, after you format, and the Installer still doesn't see the drive, simply restart your computer and run the Installer again off the Tiger v10.4 DVD.

Hope that helps.

i've never done this before, and i honestly don't know what an ATA chain is. i want to keep my internal HD to store my software on, but use the external for mp3's and saves files. about setting all that up like you said, i have no idea where to do it. could you give a mini walk through of it?

i am having a MAJOR problem though, my disk drive won't open so i don't even know how i am going to reinstall the OS!?!? if i press the eject key on the keyboard, nothing happens. if i press the eject button in itunes same thing, and when i press the one in the finder, the finder freezes. anyway, thanks again for all the help guys i know this is probably a pain in the ass for you. i just don't know that much about OSX yet and i've never done this before.

you need to say what your computer specs are, hardware, software so ppl can help you
an ata chain is just fancy talk for the hard drive(s) and ribbon cable that attach to the ide slot(s) on the mother board
