View Full Version : Clean install?

When Win7 arrives in the Fall, I plan to do a clean install. I purchased a Win7 upgrade from Future Shop when it was on sale awhile ago.
The only thing that will be different is the size of my hard drive. I currently have a 160 gigabit drive which is filling up. I plan to substitute a 500 gigabit drive. All the rest of my system will stay the same ie the video card, memory, motherboard, video capture card.
Will the change in the size of the hard drive cause a problem with the clean install? I am currently using WinXP as my OS.

What I omitted to say is will the clean install with the new hard drive be accepted by Microsoft when the software is installed?
A couple of months ago I upgraded my video card and my memory to bring my system up to snuff for Win7 . Big Brother in my PC didn't like this and I had to call up MS to get a new validation code.

When you make a major hardware change you will in most cases get this from microsoft , its no big deal to re activate . In your case you are doing a clean install so you wouldn't have any problems .
I'm on the same track here. Have them ready and Oct 22 here we come.
New SATA 500GB, more Mem to 4GB and there is from MS the "Win7 Upgrade
Advisor" will examine your computer and will suggest changes if required.
My Lappy is a Dell 6000 and said that the Graphic Card would not run"Aero".
I think it is just eyecandy. For AMD Processors there is a test from MS also.
Get "AMD-V_Hyper-V_Compatability_Check_Utility". The main glitsch would
probably be the Drivers as some of the providers might be tardy.with it.
I presume that you have an OEM version of XP and not a Retail version,
due to the interest of MS. Meanwhile I will copy my Drivers so I can reinstall
them after Win7 is installed. Hope to hear more from our more knowledgeable
friends till the day arrives. Thank you. Geo
Just a thought but if you leave your 160 xp drive in and do the clean win7 install on the new hard drive, it will automatically create a dual boot.
Just an FYI if you want to keep both operating systems :)

Theres also the fact you can run xp inside of windows 7 now.
Not sure if its in his windows upgrade version but if it is he needs not run both.
Ms put this in there for people running quite old aps or hardware that may not run in 7.

But this virtual XP on Win7 is only on the Ultimate version, not on the Home Premium.

But this virtual XP on Win7 is only on the Ultimate version, not on the Home Premium. That's why he said "Not sure if its in his windows upgrade version but if it is he needs not run both".
Don't forget that you have to have a processor that supports virtualization.
Just to let you all know, I'm running the following "Released to Manufacturing" versions: These will be the versions that will become "retail"
Windows 7 Ultimate on my core2duo laptop
Windows 7 Professional on this machine, my Quad. It's installed on a separate hard drive with a boot menu for XP and Windows 7.
Both machines have been quite stable, no errors or restarts to report. No strange anomolies to report as yet :)

I'm running Win7 RTM also. Dont have a license yet so I just rearm every 30 days 'til my license comes in from Future Shop at $64 some dollars.
I trust the system enough to have installed most of all my software including financial package Quicken.
It is "what Vista should of been" !
yes, it's Vista "fixed".
I haven't had any problem with device drivers (if none are available yet for windows 7, vista drivers work) or any software I've installed. I did experience a problem with the internet going to sleep and not waking up in the beta versions but that seems to have been fixed now.
So far, it's been quite non-problematic.

I'm also running Vista Pro, and Ultimate, I installed ultimate on my desktop on an SSD drive and WOW, boot up time is 20s, and everything is blazing fast. Windows 7 is much more nimble and no where near as 'bloated' as Vista was, in my opinion anyway. I am also running the 64 bit versions, no issues with device drivers either, runs well and fast.

hello there
my friend has a pirated version of XP and was wondering if the Win 7 upgrade would still function or the upgrade was just for Vista.
He does not want to dual boot, just wants 1 OS.

From what I've read, Windows 7 upgrade is recommended only for current Vista users. All others should do a clean install.
Finally, tell you friend to ditch his pirated XP ;)

I prefer Windows Vista over Windows 7. There is nothing wrong with Vista.

So for my friend to get Win 7 is to get Vista and than get Win 7 upgrade.
Or can he just totally clean out Win XP and install Win 7 upgrade, would this work?

Similar here. I don't know Windows 7 but Vista has been working pretty good. Most issues I had were me doing something stupid or playing around with things I shouldn't.
I guess I'll end up with 7 when I buy my next PC or whatever OS is sold then.

I upgraded from Vista to 7 simply becuase I have a MSDN account so I got Windows 7 free of charge.
If it wasn't for that I wouldn't have upgraded. There are a couple of things I like about it over Vista (seems a bit faster, and the networking interface is nicer) but nothing that would convince me to go out and pay for an upgrade right now.

I feel the same way...
I've always believed in the old adage that says "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I haven't had any issues with Vista (yet), and unless and until I do, I'll stick with Vista.

Here is good article dated as of today for different install, update, upgrade or clean install.
He is the one from 2-3 years ago who wrote how to do the clean install with Vista upgrade instead of buying the full version. A difference of $100.
It worked for me and now I will do the same with Win7 as soon as my license comes in from Future Shop.

I believe MS is stupid with all these types of softwares for one OS . Just make one for business and one for the general public at a fair price like $100 . No upgrade or home / pro / ultimate or whatever but rather just one type and thats it . And also you either can do 32 or 64 bits which ever you like period

Some believe that keeping things complex is a sign of higher, sophisticated intellect.
It isn't. Microsoft is proof.

It's nothing more than marketing...
I mean, look at how many different "versions" of Tide laundry detergents out there now. It's friggin' mind boggling.

Its would have made sense for say three versions and not six.
Of course the other three are oem versions of the first three.
They just confused the issue.
Up side is the os is very good this time...lol.
