View Full Version : Moulding falling off - how can I make it stick??

I got a dealer installed "chorme accent kit" option on my 2004 Honda and one of the mouldings fell off recently. When it came off, I noticed that all that was used to stick it on the dash was two-sided glued strips instead of real glue :(

I've included some pics to better illustrate my problem:

Pic #1 - moulding off
Pic #2 - moulding on
Pic #3 - front of moulding
Pic #4 - Back of moulding showing those two-sided strips.

My question:

What would be the best method to glue this back on so it stays on? I'm thinking something like a silicone based solution might work best. :rrg:

Any ideas?

Thanks :)

Since the dealer installed the kit, take it back to them and have them re-install it.

That two sided tape should stick if the surfaces were properly cleaned which I see they didn't.

This part being part of your dash, you would not want any thick glues inbetween the dash and the trim because the thick stuff will not let the trim lay flat.

I've thought of that Rustynut, but if they are just going to do the same thing, only to have it fall off again, I'd rather have a more permanent solution.

You can go to one of the automotive trim shops or window tint shops that carry the specific tape and see if you can get a bit of that tape from them along with the cleaner. Be warned though if this stuff is really cleaned properly it will stick like crap to a diaper and will not let go if you mis-align it at installation.

Btw, you need to stay away from the Butyl type glues, they tend to let go after the extreme heat gets to it, and the interior does get a lot of heat build up. With the expansion and contraction of the dash and the trim, it won't take long for it to let go unless you use the proper product to stick it down.

Yes, that is right... it's just double sided tape that holds them on.

And as Rusty said, it probably wasn't cleaned well enough before it was applied.

This is the same tape that is used to hold on the body side mouldings, so you know the stuff can stick... It's 3M's VHB (Very High Bond) ;)

A body shop is the place I go to get some of this tape.. they'll have all the different sizes and thicknesses of it so you can get just the right stuff ;)

This tape is very expensive, so be prepared to give them a few $$ for doing you the favour ;)

I'd just go back to Honda and let 'em do it... print this article out if you want to crank 'em up. :)
