I made an absolutely, positively STUPID mistake last night. I fell for one of the oldest tricks in the book after receiving the email below:

Yours Truly

While coming from a good friend of mine, it still had my suspicions up but I actually hadn't spoken to this friend for a few weeks so it seemed plausible.

I was in XP at the time, so just to be safe, I switched to my Ubuntu drive before trying the link (http://cztq.digi-wigi-block-checker.com/?id=A7cdG&the_invite=*******@hotmail.com)

After a moment it became clear that this was just garbage but it got me very worried.

Have I just given away my hotmail account and pw to some SOB's on a phishing expedition or has my Ubuntu now become infected with a bug that will do something nasty in the near future? :nnk:

(Note: I immediately changed my hotmail PW after trying the link.)

nope I don't think they got anything more than your ip address.

I could be wrong.

Unless your browser is not up to date with patches, I think you're okay provided you didn't click on anything once the page loaded.

There were ways to get Linux boxes to run scripts as root when they really shouldn't, but most of these loopholes have been fixed and you have to be really (and I mean "Really") thick to not see it coming.

Ken_ver1_5's and Mindcore's assessments are accurate. Nonetheless, as an added measure you could (should) install "NoScript" for Firefox. That way you can pick and choose what you want to allow.

Thanks everyone. I'll still keep and eye out for any weirdness but at least now I can be a bit less anxious.
