My tenant recently moved out of my basement and I am going to finally take it over. I had just a rubber backed carpet down and need to replace it. If I get an installer in will he/she put a regular carpet down with an underpad? Also is it possible for them to install the tack strip on cement around the edges?

They will install whatever type of carpet you purchase.... but rubber backed is not going to be easy to find.

These days they have an underpad that is very good over concrete... but costs a fortune...

And yes, they can install tackless strips onto concrete... it even comes with lil concrete nails in it, ready to go... :)

Thanks for the info Dan. We are getting ready to head out to the stores to see our options in carpet types. I think we are leaning towards Berber. I just didn't want some salesperson to try and tell me you can't do this or that. Thanks again.

I had Industral carpet put in my basement and what they did was make carpet base boards in stead of wood ones here are a pic to let you see what i mean with the good underlay it cost about 500 to do

A Berber sounds good, but I would seal the floor first if it isn't already.

Stops concrete dust from coming through the carpet over time.

Clean the floor, then roll on a Wellbond solution, mixed 3 parts water - 1 part Wellbond.

Glen, I had new carpeting put in the basement of our rental unit. Get the underlay with the vapour barrier backing, generaly a silver or gold colour. I believe it cost me an additianal $.21/sq meter. (3.5 yrs ago)

Regarding the tack strip, they do have them for concrete as DrDan mentioned.

Good luck.:)

make sure there are no leaks and good venting or you could end up with serious mold issues.
