View Full Version : Apple planning launch of video iPod
Apple Computer has begun production of a new version of its iPod digital music player that will be capable of playing videos, AppleInsider has learned.
Reliable sources believe the iPod could be introduced as early as next week, possibly around the time Apple releases results from its fourth fiscal quarter of 2005.
Although details are scarce, sources who claim to have seen the new iPod describe it as being similar to Apple's 60GB iPod photo player, but several millimeters thinner.
The device reportedly sports a smaller click-wheel akin to that of the iPod nano's, making way for a larger, higher-resolution color display that extends further down the face of the device.
The release of the iPod video is expected to be accompanied by a "major update" to Apple's iTunes music store that will include a significant number of music videos and other short video content.
Apple, which had been updating the "Music Video" segment of its iTunes download service on a regular basis, stopped posting new music video content last month, leading to speculation that a major content update was brewing.
Sources have also recently reported sightings of a new Apple wireless device, which is similar to Apple's AirPort Express wireless base station, but also includes a video out option. However, it's unclear if the long-rumored device will coincide with the introduction of a video capable iPod.
Apple recently introduced an ultra-thin version of its iPod called the iPod nano. According to well-placed sources, the company has modeled to sell 3 million of the players each month during the holiday shopping season.

Right, you can play videos with iPod linux but the quality is not very good especially if you don't have a colour iPod. From the sounds of it, this video iPod should be good especially with 60 GB of storage.
The device reportedly sports a smaller click-wheel similar to that of the iPod nano's, making way for a larger, higher-resolution color display that extends further down the face of the device. The first images show that the device is a thicker larger version ofr the iPod Nano.
According to Apple Insider ,,Apple has begun production of the new iPod Video which could be in stores by as early as the 18th of October 2005. The launch will be a bitter blow to Creative Technology who are reeling from trying to compete with Apple in the MP# music player space.During the last 2 quarters Creative have reported losses in excess of $100 million dollars. Also set to come under pressure when Apple launches the iPod Video is the European Archos video system.

October 5, 2005 - Select members of the industry and media received invitations Tuesday from Apple to a special event taking place one week from today at the California Theater in San Jose. The event, Think Secret has learned, will not usher in the much rumored video iPod but rather new PowerBook and Power Mac systems.
Specifics, however, remain scarce surrounding the PowerBook and Power Mac G5 update, which Think Secret first reported in September.
While the October 12 event will disappoint Apple watchers eager to see the fruits of Apple's labor on its fifth-generation iPod, it has become apparent that Apple wants to avoid detracting attention from the new iPod nano, which carries high margins and which Apple expects might sell up to 10 million units this holiday quarter. While full-size iPod sales have been depressed for the better part of the year, especially in capacities beyond 20GB, Apple's bigger priority at this time is halting the skid in both Power Mac and PowerBook sales.
PowerBook and Power Mac systems have both received small updates once this year in February and April, respectively.

Instead of releasing a new ipod every 2 months, why not wait half a year and release one with EVERYTHING included. Holy, there's been what, 6 versions now? more?

Re-releasing their products with tiny upgrades at a time seems to be Apples thing.
yea Apple is the ONLY company that releases minor bumps every 3 to 6 months. No one in the tech world does that.

Never said that... but they are just more excessive. I mean, what about the OS releases? How many do they need?

black and white. Sarcasm deserved.
They release a new OS every 2 years it seems. We're happy to get an updated, much faster wicked OS every 2 years that costs like 150 bucks. M$ on the other hand, well keep on keepin on with XP :)
look here for an average on how often Apple products get updated. Doesn't really seem much different than other tech companies to me.

Come on tim, the cat's dead.
back to the ipod's,
I bet apple will come out with a new nano next week with 10gb, then the week after with a new 11gb non scratch screen version, then the week after with a autographed U2 nano with 11.5gb and 4 loaded songs. Cash grab anyone?
the cat's dead? Tell that to anyone who keeps posting crap.
I'm not sure why people think Apple releases products every month or week. Maybe they smoke too much weed I don't know, but look at the release averages, it's about 9 months on average for *every* product.
seems to me apple keeps coming out with newer versions very often.... for the ipod that is. and i dont know if they handle that accesories but wow. they are not cheap, nor seem to be a good deal. ive seen carrying cases for 45 dollars i think it was because it was roots and sold in the college book store lol

The new ipod release is still a rumour at this stage. No one knows for sure what will be released on Oct. 12.
"An Apple Invitation-Only event is to be held at 10:00 a.m. October 12 at the California Theater in San Jose. The invitation itself features red curtains in the background with simple white type in the middle stating "One more thing..."
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has often used the phrase "one more thing" at the end of Keynote addresses at large conferences to bring out new products."
It could be something very different. There is alot of speculation on this topic on many forums right now.

Apple is much more than just the ipod.
Mind you the ipod is making them a great deal of cash and exposing people to apple products.
Personally, I hope it has something to do with HD video.
Time will tell.

I wasn't trying to attack you personally, or even Apple for that matter, it's just stating what I've clearly noticed. They bring new iPods out WAY too often.

there is a couple different lines and they update them at different intervals.
every 157 days, or about twice a year. Other Apple products average around every *200 days*.
You guys gotta stop drinking draino.

Draino is too expensive, I find Fortino's clog remover is better for the price.
