laptop toshiba Satellite / win Xp -home SP3 build 2600
problems started in post "contious warnings "
I removed symantec antivrus with "your unistall' and it seems ok
now I have this box that says that any one of dozens of differnet .exe file are missing and that netpgua.dll needs to be reinstalled . Problem is that nobody seems to have heard of this file . google search shows nada.
Any suggestions on what to do. Will a simple restore work, but then I'm stuck with an obsolete symantec ( old university install that i can not update anyway)
i seem to have really pooched myself this time

I replied with an idea in your other post.

You don't need the Symantec (Norton) install now that you have Avast installed. The missing files may remnants from tyhe Sysmanted install. Run CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) if you haven't already. (Don't let it install the Yahoo Toolbar option during install)

Bogie, i removed the AVast because i was getting the blue screen syndrom with it.i restored to original config and the un-installed symantec with "your uninstall" seemeed to unistalled symantec. installed AVG but it told me that symantec was there and may conflict. I could not find any residue of symantec, but i may not know what i'm looking for. apart from all of this i still have no idea what what netpgua.dll is !

I use Avast and it is the best I have used.
Symantec could be the cause of your challenges - especially if an older version. Run CCleaner before doing anything else.
Yes, you van reinstall/repair XP but follow the proper instructions first. DO NOT use the first REPAIR option you are presented with. Here are the instructions. You won't lose anything but you Windows updates that may have to be run again from the Windows update feature. All programs will be fine.

I'm not sure if this will help , but you could or maybe should use the norton removal tool...here's a link

when I uninstalled Norton I used the above program, you need to use it to get rid of left over registry.

this norton was installed by the university and i have no product key or password so how do you get the damn thing out ? I am sure that there are lots of really pissed off people out there who hate this setup. why is it so hard to get RID of something ?

I think you only need the product key to re-install norton...from the previous posts, you have already removed norton and are just trying to get rid of the residuals...this program will do that.

i tried to run that "norton removal tool" and believe it or not , it told me that it can not run because i have to remove
- Norton Symantec 9 anti virus or later - with .... wait for it ... add remove program first so i went into the registry and followed the manual removal instructions and took out whatever it said that i could find.
HOWEVER i still have the original problem of the dialouge box with the
"reinstall netpgual.dll message appearing dozens of times. It has also rendered the navigation arrows inoperative amongst other things. I did scan it several times with AVG and antisuperspyware or whatever that second one is . found a few things and fixed them. any ideas ...?

YIPPPEEE i got the bugger fixed , thanks to all your help and suggestions. ii cleaned everything up , ran and re-ran several cleaning /antivirus/antispye ware things and still had the boxes popping up. the silver bullet was
sfc /scannow (only 1 space). in the command line. new to me but it has solved the issues and it appears to be fine now . thanks again
