Play VideoMARKHAM -- Having Aunt Martha stop by for dinner over the holiday season is one thing, but having 50 ants for breakfast was more than Tommy Lam could stomach.

The jeweller said he found them lining his McDonald's burritos.

"It was disgusting!" Lam told the Sun yesterday soon after he said he made the gruesome discovery.

The 28-year-old said he and his girlfriend stopped by the busy fast-food restaurant at Markham Rd. and Denison St. around 11 a.m. yesterday to grab a quick bite to eat on their way to work.

After waiting 15 minutes in line, the couple said they ordered two sausage and egg burrito combos to go, which includes a total of four pita-wrapped sandwiches.

Soon after, they sat down to eat at his business, Jewellery Box, just around the corner at Steeles Ave. E. and Middlefield Rd. That's when Lam claims they spotted dozens of ants inside and outside their burritos.

NOT MOVING

Fortunately, the little critters weren't crawling around. But that was of little consolation to Lam, who had already eaten the first of his two burritos.

Whether or not that first sandwich was also laced with dead ants, Lam is not sure.

He doesn't even want to think about it.

"I still can't believe this happened!" Lam said, shaking as he recalled the ordeal.

Finding the ants in his food was shocking enough, but Lam said he was even more stunned by the reaction he received from the store manager when he returned with the contaminated food.

NO APOLOGY

"He didn't even offer an apology," Lam said of the McDonald's manager, a man who only identified himself to him as Keith.

The one thing the manager did offer, Lam wanted no part of.

"He offered to replace our burritos, that was it," Lam said. "I just said, 'No thanks!' and walked out."

Before yesterday, Lam said he stopped by the McDonald's regularly for breakfast on his way to work.

"But I'll never eat there again," he said.

Lam said he later tried to contact McDonald's head offices and his local public health department, but he wasn't able to reach anyone over the long weekend.

However, he still has the burritos and he vows that first thing tomorrow morning he'll be demanding some answers.

Staff at the McDonald's location referred the Sun's calls to the company's head office.

A message left on the Media Relations Centre line was not returned yesterday.

York Region Community and Health Services also could not be reached for comment.

Ants may be the healthiest thing in them. Even dead ants.

I've done some work in some McDonalds, the overnight staff are supposed to clean everything all night long but usually just do a once over, change the oil, quick wipe off, some naps and snacks. As long as they are "working" when the manager comes in in the morning they are good.

A Markham man says he found about 50 ants in his McDonald's breakfast burrito.
Play Video Ants have been known to ruin picnics, but the last place you'd expect to find them is in your fast food.

To Tommy Lam, the "Golden Arches" have become a lot more tarnished, after he found at least 50 dead ants in his McDonald's breakfast burrito on Saturday. But so far, he hasn't heard an apology.

"This whole ordeal is mind-boggling," Lam, 28, said yesterday.

"I get sick thinking of what happened."

Lee and his girlfriend stopped by the busy fast-food restaurant at Markham Rd. and Denison St. on their way to work at his business, the Jewellery Box.

After waiting 15 minutes in line, the couple said they ordered four pita sandwiches to go. It wasn't until they opened the paper wrapping did they discover dozens of ants inside and outside their burritos.

While Lam admits while he hasn't fallen ill to ingesting several bites of the ant-laced burrito, it's protein that's unwanted.

"When I think of it, it grosses me out," he said. "Just bringing back the bad memories.

"Fifty ants is the minimum, but I think it was closer to 80 or 90."

Lam said the York Region Health Agency took a sample of the ant-infested burrito and sent it off for inspection.

McDonald's Canada, for its part, said it's still investigating the cause of the insects.

"We immediately began a thorough investigation, which has been unable to confirm the customer's allegation," wrote McDonald's Restaurants of Canada spokesman Stephanie Sorensen in an e-mail statement.

It reminds me of an episode from The Rockford Files, where Angle puts ants from a vial on his meal to get it free.

I never go to Burger King, it always leaves a bad feeling in my stomach after I eat it and it doesn't feel the same comming out as it did going in.

I only go to Harvey's, Licks and Wendy's.

I pretty much gave up on the burger chains for the same reason. I do like Mr. Burger at Bond and Park from time to time.

I not a fan of Mr. Burger ever since I delivered milk products to them years ago before the renovations they did. The kitchen was disgusting and very dirty. I don't know about it now since I haven't been in the new kitchen since they renovated.

I like going to North End Burger which is just south of Mr. Burger just on the other side of the train tracks that you drive under on the East side.

Go to Wally's up at North End (Beatrice&Simcoe), or give Mr. A's a try at King and Division. Both have delicious home-made burgers.

I never eat at fast food chains anyways - I get free coupons for McDonalds from my McManager friend all the time I never use. I might go to Wendy's or Taco Bell like 4 times a year. I wasn't allowed to eat fast food when I was a kid, and living in a small town with no fast food to be seen was helpful to that.

Best burgers, bar none, in the GTA...

Johnny's Hamburgers

So the burgers come out of a box, the staff wear paper hats and service can be surly. Who cares? Johnny’s does hamburgers the way you imagine they were back when “McDonald” was a Scottish surname and Mike Myers, a former customer, lived locally. They’re cooked hot—with fire—and dressed to order on a soft and satisfying white bun. All for $2.65.

They've been in business for a gazillion years. Their burgers are to die for :)
