I am trying to erase a movie file from my computer and I get an error message that says that it is in use by another program (no programs that I know of are running). How do I delete it. I have tried rebooting and going straight to the file and it still won't go. I am running Windows XP Home.

Right-click on the file and select Properties

Make sure it is not checked read-only and under the 'Advanced' button make sure that there is no check in the 'File is ready for archiving' box.

DESCRIPTION:
DelLater allows you to mark files to be deleted the
next time Windows starts. This is useful for times
when a file can't be deleted because it's in use,
and this is the method used by anti-virus scanners
when they're unable to delete files for that reason.

All efforts were made to ensure that DelLater adheres
to the guidelines outlined in the MoveFileEx documents
(Platform SDK - Microsoft Developer Network), including
using two seperate methods as required (one for
95/98/ME, the other for NT/2K/XP/2003).

This package contains three files:
readme.txt (1140 bytes) - This file
dellater.asm (3417 bytes) - Assembly source code
dellater.exe (2560 bytes) - Program file

No need to install third party software.
Just make a new text file. Rename it to the offending video's file name --along with the extension. Copy>Paste over the offending video clip. Delete.

I've tried to use this method but when I Copy > Paste the newly created file over the video clip, it says "filename already exists. Choose another filename". I've also tried the other suggestions but it still doesn't work:(

Could anyone please let me know if there's any other way to delete these movie files without the need of the third-party software.

Thanks so much!

If you can locate the filename while in command prompt, use the deltree command.
This is a bit more work than other suggestions and a knowledge of dos is necessary.

I would download one or more of the programs previously suggested and try that first. ( if you haven't already )
