Hi, I've a problem.

I just dug out an old ancient PC from garage that contain a software I needed for a certain task, along with it datas.

I wonder if that possible for me to upgrade the hardware to P4 2.0G by simply clone the win98 over the new larger HD?

I know w2K & XP do not allow user to do that, but I couldn't remember if win98 had such problem.

I dare not to temper with it before knowing the details. If any of you remember, please help me out. That would save me lots of agony of doubt.

Thanks in Advance

It should work, though you will need the drivers handy for the new components.

If you mean attaching an old Hard drive to your new computer, yes you can. Set the old drive as slave, and you should be golden.. more info is needed.

Set the old drive as slave will disable the software I wanted along with it. This functionable custom programmed software with origin floppy disk that I trashed it long ago is the main reason I am after. No only that, the data is key component I want but read and run only by the program.

Let's say I install win98 from scratch in a not so new p4 PC, then I clone all the softwares and data over, instead install, possible? If so, how stable it is?

Thanks again for try to help

Only problem with that is that any dll files/drivers etc that was originally stored in the original OS folders would not be there. That could cause problems with opening or the operation of the program.

perhaps you can find another copy of the pgm disk on the net and install it on the new computer and then transfer the files over.
